Throwing up

Glad that Bentley seems to be out of the woods! Carafate is oldie but goodie and I suspect you will be home for while on it, probably along with some pepcid and anti nausea meds for good measure. Good thing that stomach lining rejuvenates really fast- in humans it is 5 days for total new inner lining...
anyway, bad news is yes, what you were told about intestines being more prone to obstructions after surgeries- it is correct for humans, we see it often.
Good part about human obstructions very few of them need additional surgery, total NPO/ nothing per mouth/ for couple of days usually resolves the case.
I have started crating both of mine when not supervised and really think it is the way to go.

Thanks for the info--that's good to know.

And yes, you're right about the crating. I think the rule will be from now on when we are anywhere but home Bentley will be crated.

At home the house is always thoroughly dog-proofed, but you just can't rely on others to guess what your dog might get into.

Glad to hear Bentley is feeling better.

I would suspect carafate and acid blocker like pepcid to go home too. Stomachs don't scar down to much unlike intestines. GLad it was only in the stomach.

glad to hear that Bentley is doing so much better. it's good you found a great vet so quickly too.
Pups will be 2 in Nov and they get crated whenever I leave the house and at bedtime. Callie is crated also because she got into stuff last summer when the boys were already crated so it was obvious who the culprit was- never suspected the little angel of anything like that before. luckily she only got into food type stuff so no problems from that.
Dixie just recently decided that she was going to chew the baseboard at the corner of the kitchen/living room- she got yelled at for that :rolleyes2:

Bentley is coming home tonight! He hasn't thrown up today, and seems to be doing well. (And yes, he is on the medicine that both Ellen and Shelli mentioned). I'll post when he gets here (probably around 6).

I just wanted to add a note here that our new vet (the one who has been so great throughout this ordeal) did her internship at Red Bank in NJ. I know that clinic has been mentioned on here a couple times (by Dani, I think). So it's great to know that she comes from a place with a good reputation.

Very happy to hear that Bentley is coming home tonight. I hope he has an easy recovery and his sister lets him relax a little :wink2:.

Dani's dog went to Red Bank for detox and my chihuahua went there for chemotherapy. RB Animal Hospital is highly recommend by most vets in our area.

Shhh....Randi. Vinca gets very embarrassed by her meth addiction

Seriously though, Red Bank is a fantastic animal hospital with an awesome reputation. I also had another Sheltie years and years ago (Blossom) get treated for a brain tumor.

I am very happy that you found a great vet!

OK, I'm glad you said it first! I was wondering what "detox" meant... :uhoh:

Bentley's going to be so, so glad to be home with you, DH, and Lexi. Hopefully this will be a one-time "adventure"!
