Throwing up

Update

I found a vet based on a recommendation from someone in our agility club.

They didn't have any appointments, but despite the fact that we had never been there before, told us to bring Bentley in ASAP and drop him off. I felt comfortable doing that because they even said "We normally don't do drop offs with new clients because the vet wants to get to know you and your dog, but in this case we want him here so we can see him as soon as we can and can even start treatment if need be".

Jonathan met with the vet around 2:30 after they had done some x-rays. Looks like Bentley DOES have a blockage, but the vet thought it looked like some metal (maybe the clasp/snap of the box?) surrounded by food. But, she also said that clinically he looked fine (no swelling, discomfort, or pain). She felt that it was likely that he will pass it, and that surgery right now wasn't necessary.

So, she sent us home with some medicine for the vomiting and we have an appointment for first thing Monday morning. She is going to take another x-ray at that time to see if the blockage is moving down.

Let's hope it moves down/it passes by then so that we don't have to discuss the next option...

Thanks for your thoughts!

Bentley

How is your sweet little guy doing? I just wanted to say, I really think you would feel much more at ease if you took him to a vet right away. Puppy things can be serious and you would never forgive yourself if something happened to him while you are waiting and watching. Hopefully, it is really nothing too bad, but the vet will put your mind at ease. You can also call an emergency clinic first and see if it is okay to give him Pepcid to calm his tummy down. And instead of meat, I would try some plain white rice at first.

My wishes are with you and Bentley. Take care and let us know what happens.

ohhhh sorry to hear that Bentley has a blockage..but relieved you atleast know what is making him sick...Hope he passes it though with out needing any surgery!! Let us know how hes doing!!

Sorry Bentley's sick Ashley. I had the same thing happen with Fergus awhile ago. My vet did the same thing, took and x-ray and found the offending object, waited 24 hrs and took another. Lucky for us it moved forward and into the large intestine so she said she was pretty sure he would pass it. Never did figure out what it was. I searched poop for days and never found a thing. I hope the same thing happens with Bentley, he can pass this and you can avoid surgery.

I am so glad you took him to the vet and found out what is happening and now can go forward with all paws crossed that it will come out easily. He must be some what miserable. Did they say if giving him pumpkin or cod liver oil would help- can you give dogs cod liver oil? Any how prayers on the way for Bentley. How are you doing?

best wishes for bentley.

i hope it passes as easily as possible.
poor guy..its tough when they can't even tell us when it hurts :(
Glad you found a good vert.

Dear St. Francis,

Please take a peek at Bentley and ask the Good Shepherd to heal his blockage. This little guy means so much to his family at home at Sheltie Nation. Keep him safe and bless him daily.
In His name we ask,
Amen

Sorry to hear about Bentley! I hope he'll be OK and can pass it on his own. It does sound like you've found a good vet though. That's a big help!

hmm, I would love to hear Justicemom and Dr Quahog opinions on what do they do with doggies like that, how long do the wait...
I kinda think if it is not out within 3 days, it is not coming out and yeah, IT IS symptomatic poor boy can not keep anything down...
Che had total blockage from cooked chicken bone, resolved in 36 hrs after eating it.
Anyway, anecdotal info- Sammy, my BIL rescue pup, was found dehydrated after bouts of diarrhea for several days and was found to have ball of wire and swelling of the lining in the stomach. She was going into surgery and when they started prepping her, some sweet soul decided she needs something for pain so she was given/ the way I heard it from vet technician almost by accident/ some hydromorphone for pain. Well, this drug can cause some decent vomiting so that ball of wire came right up on the table... hence no surgery was done...
We don't induce vomiting in humans much anymore due to technology advances but I think there is still valid cases that can be used for dogs. I know of someone whose sheltie is stone eater, so she has had several episodes of swallowed stones which were successfully removed by inducing vomiting...
Just food for the thought and hopefully we will hear good poo report soon:smile2:
