Throwing up

Sorry, I'm cheating and jumping to the end of the thread without reading all the possible solutions and outcomes....so maybe this was already answered.

Some months back, Indh starting puking up bile. etc. at night. There was now reason for it that could be explained. Except that some pups go through a period where an empty stomach caused stomach upset.

There is a thread on this somewhere, and I honestly don't remember the absolute treatment, but it worked for Indy.

I think it involved making sure he was fed in smaller increments throughout the day and finally a small amount at night. Whatever it he got over it a few weeks later.

Maybe someone else remembers this thread.

yes Barb...remember that thread, but this one Bentley ate a massive amount of leather and had an obstruction that required surgery....

How is Bentley doing? Is he sneezing less or atleast less mucusy? The sleeping more is probably from the anesthesia and he is just recovering sleeping it off...

I bet the coughing is from the intubation- I'm sure that he was out a little longer than a neuter. I know the tube can irritate people's throats so I bet it's not that different for a dog- except he can't tell you what's up.

It's hard to tell. He is still snorting a bit, and sneezes when he gets up and walks around (which is really only when we make him).

I do know that he was under anesthesia (and thus intubated) for longer than usual. They had to give him 2 rounds of anesthesia because of it.

Luckily we have an appointment tomorrow for a recheck of his CBC (I guess to make sure his red blood cell count isn't as low anymore), so I'll ask the doctor then about it.

He did bark a few times, and seemed interested when the cat walked by, and got a little too excited when he heard dogs outside (we are blasting classical music ALL day)...

But, on the negative side he doesn't even lift his tail anymore when he pees (so pathetic!), and he just stands there when he gets up now, and he eats his dinner really slowly. He also rarely drinks, so I've had to mix his food with water.

The cat thinks he is the devil reincarnated (I think because he smells "different" and like the vet) so he just hisses at him.

Poor guy, he's been through a lot if you consider how long he had the leather inside him before the surgery. I'll bet his recovery is going to be a bit slower than you'd normally expect. It's good he's seeing the vet today. He probably just needs enforced rest (as in his crate) for at least another few days along with the feeding regimen you're using.

Can he have some yogurt or cottage cheese, Ashely? That's soft and would probably be good for him.

Hopefully this is the day Bentley starts getting more back to normal. No tail english when you pee...dude you could fall over :eek2:

Hope Bentley is doing better today. When will you get the results of the CBC? And what did the vet say?

Just got the results. His RBC and hematocrit are still low, but that's probably to be expected. But, they are higher than they were pre-surgery, so that's what we want.

The vet also thought that the mucus/congestion was normal. He said that they had to tip Bentley at such an angle for the surgery that there was a significant amount of reflux that could cause irritation. His temp was normal, he looked much perkier than previously, so he thought it was okay. Just something to keep an eye on.

He does seem a bit perkier today. I have to remember that if he were a human having this surgery he'd still be in the hospital watching TV and eating jello :smile2:

So true. Glad the vet felt it wasn't anything bad and to just keep an eye on it. And glad to hear that Bentley is a bit perkier. If everyday he is a bit more like himself, that's good. :)
