Tinsel's Journey

Thanks to you and all the support you have given us over the last 2 years. When I was asked to help out the rescue, I was sure that a dog that had endured what Tinsel did would never be able to enjoy life without constant fear and suspicion. Shelties are so very sensitive by nature and how could he begin to heal was uppermost in my mind. We were lucky to have years of doggie experience behind us and could tap into the wealth of knowledge of those we knew. Finding Mirkka was a Godsend. Being able to make a journal of his daily steps enabled me to look back, during those times he stepped backwards, and see little improvements so that I could adjust his teaching sessions. It makes me teary eyed to0 when he shows obvious happiness and now he will be able to walk out and greet the world. Having a fabulous, invested husband that is willing to do without to help this little guy is a blessing. Tinsel makes it all worthwhile. Did you notice that we had his brace made with stars on it? That's because he is a little star that burns bright in our home. What Tin has taught me is to really "listen" to your dog. They will try to help you figure out their problems so that you can resolve most of them. They will also help you figure out your own if you let them.

... Did you notice that we had his brace made with stars on it? That's because he is a little star that burns bright in our home...

OK!!!! See, now you are just trying to make me cry on purpose! In all seriousness, I did notice the stars, but I didn't really connect to the significance. That is a pretty neat thought.

Now, if you will excuse me, I'm going outside to cut down an Oak tree with my pocket knife or stop a semi trailer with my bare hands. I have to do something to get my "Man Card" back - thank you very much!

Please continue to update us periodically on Tinsel's progress. I look forward to every entry.

"Let your light shine" Tinsel, so that all can know that there is hope for desperate situations. The pic of him waving is priceless.

Hey Jeff: Only a real man isn't afraid to show the soft, generous part of himself so no need to cut down that tree :) I laugh at my blacksmith. He is always offering to help me out by providing me with the "12 cent solution" to my growing group of veterinary cases but just go to his house. You will usually find him on the couch with his 16 year old, blind, JR. That or holding a treat for his equally old - I think 32 year old - horse Sunny while he whispers sweet nothings into his ear. Now, my brother in law says my hubby is being drummed out of the "husband" club because he dusted the house for me and included the areas where the wall meets the ceiling. It's 160 years old, this house, and the ceilings are 10 feet high. I'm just over 5 feet tall so we get some interesting collections of cob webs up there!

Thinking of you both!

It was just the other day the thought ran thru my head that I had not seen anything lately and was wondering how you all were doing. So glad to see the pictures and hope it all goes well. Animal medicine has come so far from years ago! Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope this makes it easier for Tinsrl to walk farther!

Tinsel hurt his left front leg. Remember, his right front is the weak leg so it means he now has trouble getting to the place in the yard to do his business. Rhi, our Terv, is going through something - possibly cancer of the adrenal gland - and has been odd. Tinsel was spinning for dinner and I think his tail hit Rhi in the face. Rhi snapped, Tinsel threw himself away from her and voila, limping badly. He is on Metacam for 3 days and already is feeling better. In the meantime, Arial, our Tennessee Walker mare, is limping on her left front. Maybe she skidded on the ice - who knows???? Pretty soon I'm going to have to sit on a street corner and sell pencils!

Oh poor babies.:( So sorry to hear Rhi may have cancer, and for you horse and of course Tinsel. Wow, three fur babies need your help all at the same time. Praying for you all!:hugs

Oh dear, that's too much illness in one family! I am sorry about Rhi, Tinsel and Ariel too. Hopefully Tin's leg is just a temporary strain from his exertion, and Ariel's leg also just a strain or something temporary.

Poor Rhi if she has cancer she's not herself, either. Hang in there. :hugs

So far Tinsel is okay now, Ariel is down to an almost imperceptible limp and Rhi is eating crap dog food mixed with Medical Recovery, but at least she is eating! Her second set of bloodwork and xrays and lipase tests are still inconclusive so we are thinking it's time for an ultrasound. Fingers crossed she is okay.

Glad to hear things are improving - that is a lot of stress to deal with, hope you are finding some time to look after yourself as well.
