Toby, the Reactive Rescue

Lucy reacts the same way and I have had her since May. Taking her to obedience class was HUGE. She still barks like a maniac sometimes but it's much better than it was before. Socializing her helped almost immediately.

Give it some time, keep doing what you are doing and don't let a bad day get you down...think of all the good days you've had and the good ones that are just around the corner. :biggrin2:

[/QUOTE]When I was walking him this morning and watching his reactions, I realized that a small tug on the leash and praise was enough to get him back on track some times. On a busy road he did very well walking past a large hydro truck on the opposite side, doing work on the hydro lines. He growled and fixated on it a bit, but when I gave him a gentle tug on the leash and kept going, he looked away and returned to my side.
This is wonderful!! I don't know if Sandstorm could do that
well! With huge noisy trucks I have to stop and hold him, he is afraid of those. Luckily we don't get many around here, it is very residential and not as busy.

Toby is continuing to do better when we're on walks. Traffic itself doesn't seem to bother him, but if someone gets out of their car near him, a car starting or slowing down near him causes an outburst every time. I think I'm going to get my dh to work with me, starting up the car and driving beside us, so that it doesn't scare him so much. He seems to usually be ok when he sees something coming, but reacts strongly when startled.

He also continues to shy at strange things, both inside and outside. Often things he's walked past many times but not noticed before, like a stop light or the desk in my computer room or some random sound will set him off.

I'm trying to be patient but it gets kind of frustrating. He cannot be outside without me in his sight or he seems to have anxiety. Often I'll try and leave the dogs outside for a few minutes to play while I get their Kongs ready in the morning, but as soon as Toby hears a sound, looks to me for reassurance and discovers I'm gone, he has a barking fit.

The other day he did something that really shocked us. I was leaving to go see a movie with a friend, my dh was raking the front lawn and the dogs were on our front porch, which is gated. When I jumped into my friend's car and drove away, Toby barked and proceeded to jump over the side of the porch and land on the pavement in the driveway. He was lucky that he didn't break anything and only got slight road rash on his bottom lip. I don't know if this is separation anxiety or if it has to do with the sound of the car, or possibly both. It never occurred to me he would do something like that, I'm so relieved that he wasn't hurt and didn't become lost!

Looking forward to our obedience class tomorrow, I have lots of questions... :confused2:

So good that you're taking Toby to class. Just remind yourself that you've only had him a short while and that some things are foreign to him.

The episode with the porch is scary. However, at least you now know of his capability and drive. Do you think agility in his future ?

Yeah, I know. The barking can be a bit much to take some times, both inside and outside. Inside it frazzles our nerves on bad days. Outside I know it looks to many people as though he's vicious or badly trained. In addition, I feel badly that he's so afraid.

I'm a bit disappointed, my friend pulled out of the obedience class tomorrow, I was really looking forward to her being there with her dog. Oh well...

Considering doing some agility in the future, only for fun though. I stop enjoying all of the classes by putting pressure on myself to perform. But I think agility might be a good way to help Toby gain confidence. I may consider doing agility at some point with the girls too.

I'm glad to hear that Toby's making such great progress. You're obviously on the right track with him. Good luck!!

YES YES YES
Best thing I ever did with my reactive, little devil :) Look at him now, he never even tried to kill that Rottie puppy at the dogpark today at all! LOL Just a small snap and growl :o
Seriously tho I NEVER thought I'd be thinking of competing with Toffee when I first started but it truly increased his confidence tenfold.. and MINE in him, too!!!!!
The girls would LOVE it, as would you, it is good for the competitive type, too.. trust me :)

I used to do agility and had originally planned on competing with Sadie, but my health is such that I have very little energy and don't feel up to practicing after working all day. My yard is also very small.

But it was a lot of fun, when I wasn't pressuring myself and feeling guilty for not practicing and I'd for sure do it again for fun.

The beauty of Shelties... my trainer says... just add water... and then you have a Sheltie doing agility LOL

I had not practiced anything all week, go to class Saturday and voila, mini snooker class course DONE and won best in class ;)
Last week.. same thing.. not trained nuffin... mini gamblers course... won best in class again, lollll

You don't have to get a dog to run in nationals, just one to have fun with ;) I betcha Ginny would be a handful, Sadie a velcro dog and Toby would take time to develop the bond with you and then be contained and powerful energy :)
