Tully's not doing well

Caro, none of the Shelties I know have presented with diarrhea with GB rupture; usually it's vomiting and fairly severe gastric upset. I don't know that it's the only symptom though. I don't think Ursidiol would cause it but honestly given Tully's condition and the fact that you know she has a mucocele I would not want to take a chance. I would insist that she be seen. What is up with these vets?? I am so tired of the virus as an excuse to put off seeing animals in critical condition. At least if they see her they can tell whether it's her IBS acting up and not her gallbladder.

This is what the American Shetland Sheepdog Association lists as specific signs of GBM rupture:
Gallbladder mucoceles (GBM) are characterized by distention of the gallbladder by a thick mass of sludge and mucus (rather than liquid bile) and may result in obstruction and rupture of the gallbladder. Clinical signs of affected dogs include vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Without surgical removal of the gallbladder, the dog may die if rupture occurs. Many other diseases cause similar clinical signs, and because gallbladder mucoceles are relatively uncommon, the diagnosis can be missed or delayed.

I hope this is not the cause and that you can get a vet to respond to you. Sending all good thoughts your way.

Thanks. I'm just waiting for one of the general vets to open at 8am and then will do a ring around until I can find a spot. Saturday morning is always hard to get in. I got the feeling the ER was fobbing me off because it was 6am and they were doing hand overs. It is disappointing, they should know how sick Tully is and I never bring her in for nothing (not at their prices - $250 just for the consult)

I am so sorry to hear that Tully is not doing well. I hope you are able to her seen quickly. Our 1st Sheltie, Hollie, had a mucocele. Her symptoms were vomiting, loss of appetite, and her lab work showed that she was in liver failure.

Poor Tully! I can't imagine how distressing this must be for you. You and Tully are always in my thoughts and prayers! Hopefully this is her IBS causing problems and not her gallbladder.:hugs:fl

Well the good news is that she has picked up a little. We got a vet appointment and she's back on metronidazole, two doses and she's already doing better. I wonder if the gallbladder infection had come back - she was showing the same signs as before (diarrhea, confusion and weakness). Just hope we make it through the night without accidents. I basically spent the afternoon asleep on the couch. Poor Tully must be buggered too.

Good news Caro! Hopefully you two can get a good nights sleep with no accidents! Poor Tully must be exhausted as well...it's very tiring and hard on a body when you have diarrhea like that!
Give Tully a pat from me and continued prayers that she has a good night and continues to improve.:hugs
