Wait... what? Puppy?

LOL I am so busy arranging Juno's social schedule! Everyone wants to meet her so I'm trying to get in a visit a day with friends. Unfortunately last night she pulled a Pico. She doesn't howl, but she loudly sang several times during the night, every couple of hours. I did not get up to get her outside since she peed pretty late and had been dry overnight the first night. But when I got her up at 6:00 she had a wet pad in the crate. I felt awful.

She was SO upset though, it was the "I'm SO LONELY" kind of crying. When I took her out all she wanted to do was jump on my leg to be picked up and held. Well, she also cried a lot in her crate on the 14 hour drive down from Oregon. They got her out and cleaned up along the way but said she just preferred being held. The breeder had them overnight in a pen with pee pads, so I think tonight we will try that. The other option is an open wire crate, big enough for a pee pad in the back, and put her in the dog room with the other two for company. I'm open to any and all suggestions and ideas. Just don't want to reward her crying if it's just wanting attention.

Meadow did not do this at all when we brought her home. I guess she was a unicorn. She slept all night and never pottied in her crate, but all pups are different I know.

Otherwise we had a great day. Got her out in the petstroller for an outing, lots of play and she went all day yesterday without a single accident in the house. Meadow is accepting her, and has played short chases a couple of times. Poor sensitive Elijah though is sure we've ruined his peaceful life. She's so great about not pestering them or going after them physically at all. She just invites play with play bows and barks. If they won't engage she gives up and finds a toy.

We measured her yesterday at about 9 inches at 8 weeks, so if she keeps up that growth rate she would be about 16" which is perfect. Here she is in her carriage.

so for Pico, I had him in a belly band when I let him in my bed. with June, you'll need a diaper I'd guess. It meant I wasn't worried about a mess, he never used it LOL

I have used a dog potty (basically a plastic grate over a pee pad, otherwise some pups play with the pad). But honestly, Pico started sleeping ON it even when he had a nice comfy crate pad. And he didn't use it much, he would use the open space on the kitchen tile so I had to make sure there was no open space for him to pee on! And then he started holding it pretty early on anyway.

I'd assume she needs a potty break once (and only once) if you go that way.

Is her crate in your room? that might have made things easier, since I had Pico in the kitchen his first month when he howled. he was totally alone, which he did NOT like.

If she is with the other pups in the puproom, she might settle, or might want to play.

You'll probably need to try everything LOL. not much help!

Awwwwww, sounds like stuff is going so well! Poor Eli... he will adjust... maybe even like her a bit after a while but try hard not to show it.

When Deacon was a pup, I bought a kit off Amazon that included a snuggle puppy which had a heat pad and heartbeat. He slept with that puppy for almost his first 2 years. I, of course, took out the heartbeat and heat-pad thing.... :) My 'puppy room' was in our powder room. At night, I'd turn the bath fan on, I put a radio in there with soothing classical music, he was covered in his crate and had his snuggle puppy. I could here him if he barked, but wouldn't immediately respond. He is still like that... he might bark once every so often during the night but often it is because he hears wildlife outside the window by his crate. 2 - 3 barks means he has to go and I respond! I do wish I had the snuggle puppy for previous puppies.... he LOVED that thing! And Deacon, as with Juno, was and still is a huge snuggler! He was the littlest guy in his litter and got picked on by everyone except his almost as small bi-black sister. He still prefers humans and is not a huge fan of other dogs.

I've never been one for pee pads, even when we had out doxies... they were SO bad about bad weather and I knew that going into ownership so no chance I was going to say.... here, go pee in the house now, Nope! you can't go in here now. We did potty trips, deacon was so small sometimes it was every 10 minutes, and since they both came home in January.... BRRRRRRR! We had sever cold and ice the year we brought Deacon home - I am sure Lisa remembers cuz she's further north than me and Deacon and Blueberry are just days apart.

I had a snuggle puppy for Pico, and he didn't bond with it. Odd, I know, considering he is a snuggler. and we did try the warming pads.

He loved cat toys, specifically the little mice that are strings wrapped around a plastic shape with a shaker noise. He would gradually unwrap the string by chewing....until the plastic bit was fully exposed and they got thrown away.

Well a much better night. I think her long road trip in a small plastic box has put her off plastic crates. We set up the bigger wire pen, with pad and toy in the front, and a pee pad just in case in the rear. She only cried a minute while going to bed. Up at 3 am for a potty trip, then slept again until 6:30. In the morning we saw she had used the pad at some point.

They are not my favorite thing especially due to the plastic involved, but it's what she's used to and it's only temporary. She already whimpered at me by the back door last night and I took her straight out and she peed. She's super smart and we'll just have to wait for physical bladder maturity.

Met our petsitter today who was so surprised and happy. She and Meadow are slowly bonding, they've played several times and Meadow does not mind hanging out with her. Elijah is very sad, he's so sensitive and a bit needy, and I think he feels displaced or just nervous. She's very good at not bugging him but will approach and sniff or ask for play and he just leaves. I hope he will adjust as she gets older.

Elijah might just feel like he is being replaced, When you're having time with him and the puppy shows up, ignore the puppy and dot on Elijah a bit more to rebuild his confidence. I bet he's confused about pack pecking order right now.
You have a dog room and the new one is somewhere else at night does she rank higher than me?
Give him extra tlc and he will realize your not changing things and leaving him in the cold . He will come around in time
It's always a challenge when the family dynamics change, but it sounds like you're on the right track and having fun :)

It sounds like thing are going great there, Sharon! So glad to hear she's bonding with Meadow and Eli is able to get some puppy peace! I'm sure she'll adjust to overnights soon. I've always crated puppies in another quiet room, and covered most of the crate with a blanket so they feel secure. They are able to hold pee/poop for the overnight at 8 weeks and most quickly figure out they don't want to sleep in a wet crate. I've never used a pee pad but if they work for you and give you a quiet night, great! There's nothing worse than a midnight singer!
