Water bowl for "side" drinkers?

If I fill the bowl up all the way Bentley will spill it down the side. I just try not to fill it too full.

I wouldn't usually fill it that high either, but Miko was lapping away at nothing for a LONG time. I felt bad. Especially since he needs the water. But you're right. When it wasn't so full, it didn't spill.

Bacca is a side drinker as well.

I found that bowls where the sides are perfectly vertical are better than bowls that slope outwards, like most dog dishes. i.e. like the first picture you showed.

A vertical bowl allows him to slurp against the side without spilling water everywhere. And as extra measure, I have rubber matts under all the dog bowls. Mine is fairly deep and I fell it about 3/4's.

Also, like you, I need to make sure that Bacca gets lots of water, I bought one similar to this for the cottage. It seems to handle the side slurping well and keeps a large supply of water available to him.

I also found this while I was looking for a photo of my drink fountain.

Good point about a straight side Barb. After thinking about that.....

I ended up buying this: Dogit Elevated Bowl

It's raised like I wanted. It's stainless steel which I preferred. And yup, the sides are mostly straight, so we'll see how he drinks out of it. He drinks out of the center of the bowl on my other stainless steel bowls which are more straight up and down. Darn that crappy bowl I have.

If he is currently eating dry dog food, here is an unrelated idea of how to get additional water into him.

I had three plastic cartons, breakfast, lunch-snack, and dinner. At night, I measured a 50%/50% mixture of water and dry dog food into the cartons, and put them in the refrigerator. In the morning, the dog food was puffed up, but not mushy, and the water was gone. (Sometimes there was a little water left in the cartons, so I had to slightly adjust the water amount downward.)

I did the above, because he had dental extractions, and soaked food was easier to eat than dry.

Update and more help

Well, those bowls aren't working. Unless I keep the bowls super filled to the top, Miko isn't getting any water. I even bought one of those non-spillable ones to see if he'd stick his nose more in the middle of it, nope he didn't. Ugh!

Any other thoughts? Maybe I should get a fountain well so it's always at a higher level. Sigh.

Chloe is a side drinker too.

The only thing that works for me is to keep the bowl filled to the top.

Let me know if you find a solution. Crazy puppers!

Emma and Noah are/were like Riley, rest the nose on the bowl and lap the water up. I have ceramic bowls, large ones now, that I use and they seem fine with. The yoga bowl is interesting. If you get one, I would be interested in how they find it.

I'm not really sure I understand what a side drinker is, but what about a bowl like this:

It is slanted, so maybe it is easier to drink out of?

Chloe would tip that right over.

I am not sure exactly how Miko drinks, but Chloe actually leans across the water bowl, rests her upper jaw and nose on the rim so that only her lower jaw is in the water and laps. So when the water gets lower than her tongue can lap up, she does get any water. Granted, if she gets too thirst, she will put her head in the bowl, but her normal way of drinker is way crazy.

I will have to see if I can get a picture of it.
