Water bowl for "side" drinkers?

A side drinker is one that most likely looks like they're licking the far end of the bowl, versus drinking from the middle.

Sigh. I was wondering about one of those slanted types, but knowing Miko, he'd just lick the high end and definitely never get any water.

It looks sturdier than the you had posted, but the point is....augh! Crazy dog. I'm not sure why he drinks like that. He never used to. I am only concerned because if he and Koji drink the water down too far, he can't get water and being a kidney dog, he needs water.

I'm just going to have to try another one. So far, nothing seems to work. If I put my hand on the edge, he only drinks in the middle because now his nose is against my hand.

I wonder if his vision isn't so hot anymore, so he can't see. Well, but other dogs seems to do this too and they're fine. So strange. My vet thought I was crazy when I asked why he does it.
 
I have a fountain - it's great for the side drinkers (Deska rests his nose on the outside of the bowl and drinks from the edge). If Deska can't drink from the bowl part (eg its getting too low) he just drinks from the fountain part. And he generally prefers to drink from the fountain anyway. I also have two bowls next to each other so at least one will be relatively full (all the animals prefer the fountain though).

My vet says its common for long nosed dogs to drink this way. I had thought Deska may not be getting enough to drink that way, but the vet said he's probably getting more than if he drank normally - he's chosen that position to maximise his intake.

That is strange. 4 shelties here and 6 at Rachel's plus puppies and I don;t think I have ever seen a side drinker. I will have to pay more attention.
 
I'll have to take a photo - I had never seen it myself until I got Deska, thought it was very strange, I tried everything I could to change the way he drank, then the vet told me not to worry about it.
