Water bowl for "side" drinkers?

lol
our Shelties are weirdos
finally reading this thread and realize Toffee drinks like that. I was kinda surprised there ARE Shelties out there who do not? hahahaha. Thought it was completely normal for Mr Dainty to not want to get his nose wet unintentionally.. aka if it's NOT combined with swimming or wave herding he doesn't care for water, lol

He is not quite as extreme as he will drink out of metal bowl and he will drink out of the bottle... but he sure is careful not to spill, LOL

I went to Petsmart to find a new bowl. First, I still find it EXTREMELY strange that Koji used to drink like this, but Miko didn't. Now Miko does and Koji doesn't. Strange little boys.

Anyhow, my biggest concern was Koji drinking down the water so that when Miko would drink, his tongue just wouldn't hit anything. Especially during the day when I'm not home. And if you recall, Miko has kidney failure, so he needs the water (sorry, can't do broth, and he gets home cooked food, so he actually gets a lot of water in that, but still drinks a ton).

So, this is what I bought them: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4001472&lmdn=Category

I wasn't sure at first if Miko would like it. Although, it was hilarious, I had moved it about a foot from where his bowl normally is and picked up the old bowl. He walked over there later, staring at the spot, like, where is it? Then saw the new one. LOL

He seems to really like it. I mean, he's still drinking from the side, but with the big water container in the way, he seems to get his face just a little bit more in there, which means he gets water faster. AND I don't have to worry about the water getting to low since it's in that huge container (holds 1 gallon). You can even put a filter in it (we use filtered water anyways, so I'm not buying it).

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think this may just work. :)

Ooo! I LIKE that. I have a plastic one currently and the water bottle looks like it's getting some film on it that I can't clean because the mouth of the bottle is way to small. I also LOVE that this is stainless instead of plastic. I may need to invest in this.

Well, the water container part is plastic (getting gross was a concern), but you're right, the opening is HUGE!!! I'd say at least 5" in diameter. So easy enough to get your hand in with a sponge. I really liked that the dish part was stainless steel. I know many others have the microbial stuff, but I really do prefer the SS. I also like it because when the house is cool, so is the water. ;)

If you...or anyone....has specific questions regarding this item, let me know. I can try to answer them.

Could you please write a brief review on it, Cheryl? One of the reviews on Petsmart said something about difficulty refilling because it's hard to "flip" a 2.5 gallon container. (I'm only looking at the 1 gallon medium.)

I would love to know how it works too. Eventually I am going to have to look into something like that with my three instead of bowls in the house.

Sure. I'm wondering if they were missing a piece on it, the water doesn't come out at all.

I posted a review, but it may not show up for awhile.

LOL. I still have 2. When I had a two story house, I think we had 3 bowls. I figure, too many is always good.

As for how it works......there's a stopper on a spring. You fill up the water from the bottom and then flip it. Because of the stopper, it doesn't leak out (not sure what was up with the person saying it was coming out - in the reviews). When you set it into place, the stopper may be pushed down, so some water comes out, but by then, it's going into the bowl. When you twist the entire water area into place, the stopper is open and the water flows out. It will stop when the water is as high as the stopper (physics come into play by now). Water will slowly come out as the dogs drink down the water.

Really liking the stainless steel bowl.

Birch sticks his whole face and head onto the bucket and his muzzle and lips get all wet by the time he is done. NONE of me other shelties do this. He also slops all over the floor. Dainty he ain't.
