Water Conditioning for Float Trip (Tips? Thoughts?)

Hollie was a natural when it came to swimming. We really didn't do anything to train her she just did it on her own. We did have a jacket for her just for a piece of mind. She had great core strength and could easily keep herself balanced on a tube no matter how many waves you would make in the pool. It was very difficult to get her to loose her balance. She LOVED the water.

Shelby - she likes water but I have never taken her swimming so I don't know what she would do. She loves playing in the ocean and chasing the waves, she loves to play and lay in the creek. She just has so much fur I do not like the idea of having to get all that hair out of the pool and me having to get her cleaned/rinsed off from the chlorine. So I just never took her. Maybe his year I will. Plus Shelby is a big clutz, definitely not as agile and well balanced as Hollie was.

What a handsome little man your Kenji is, thank you for all the great pictures of your baby, it is going to be so much fun watching him grow.

Thanks everyone for your tips and comments I'm glad you enjoyed! So i still haven't got the kiddie pool yet, but Kenji has finally graduated in the bathtub setting. I think he's going to like our upcoming float trip!

Here's a video of him swimming like a furry David Hasselhoff lol

Baywatch Kenji

I have no tips for you other than if your friends/neighbors have their pool cover still on their pool & it is one of those covers that an elephant can walk across - let Kenji run around on it. My puppy followed the other young dogs right across the pool cover and got her feet wet. After a while she laid down on top of it & was getting soaked (4 dogs on the pool cover, her being the smallest, and it pushed the cover down enough that the water was 1/2 way up her legs).

I also take Sabrina down to the beach in our development (at the bay, not the ocean yet) and let her put her feet in and experience the small waves. She pulls me to go to the beach when we walk that way, but I don't like dealing with the sand all the time...

Sabrina also loves the sprinkler and could care less if it is raining out.
I have been giving her baths in the sink since I got her and she will graduate up to the bathtub once she is too big for the sink.

I have a baby pool and she has learned to jump in and out of the pool w/o water in it. Now that it is warmer out I will be filling the pool up and letting her get used to getting soaking wet on her own adding more and more water to it as the days go on.

We live at the water and have a boat so I would love our puppy to learn to enjoy going on the boat. I am hoping she will retrieve balls/sticks in the ocean/bay like my labrador does.... She is an awesome retriever on land...

I do understand the one comment about dealing with the wet fur - I am sure it won't be fun getting the sand out of her coat if she does enjoy swimming in the bay/ocean. :ick

OMG - That video is cuteness overload!!!:biggrin2:

If taking a treat is any indication of his comfort with the whole training routine... things are looking GREAT! :wink2:
