What do you feed your Sheltie? And, Colitis advice.

Ok, maybe I am jumping the gun. CeCe still has a week on her antibiotics, to get rid of her bladder infection, then we will test again. I am definately going to ask about a full renal panel at that time. I just have read that low protien diets aren't nessecarily the answer for kidney problems. Worried Mom, but I will wait for the test to get back before making any decisions.

I agree

I've never been a fan of Rx diets but they do serve a purpose for dogs with certain issues. I would have a panel done or even get a second opinion maybe? I know there is also a kidney diet group on yahoo. I think they mainly support raw diets but it might be worth checking out for advise on other alternatives to Rx foods. If she truly has kidney issues, she would have a hard time filtering proteins and a high protein diet could be harmful so I wouldn't do that without some research and consulting a vet.

If the vet thinks she is already starting to have kidney problems, he is trying to prevent further damage by prescribing the K/D diet. If she is truley having these problems, she does need to be a on a very low protein diet. There is another prescription kidney food out there that you could ask your vet to get, it is Purina N/F. I have heard it is very good but I have not tried it with Zoe yet. Keep in mind that your vet is trying to prevent further kidney damage and extend her life. Is she done with her UTI meds yet? Have they re-checked a urine sample? If so, did they see anything? I would really push to have a full renial panel done before keeping her on the kidney diet. She may not need it if her levels are all normal.

My baby girl Cali gets the Wellness dry "super 5" puppy food with 1 or 2 spoonfuls of the wet topper food also made by Wellness. I had to switch her dry food every month or so as she would get bored with it before, but since there are 6-7 different flavors of wet food I just give her a different one each week on top of her dry to switch it up a bit and she loves it!

The cans are a bit expensive at around $3 but since I am only using 1 or 2 spoons of it I put the rest of it in a container in the fridge for the next feeding and it lasts atleast a week feeding her twice a day so its not bad at all. Plus it saves me from finding new foods that she will like every month!

I was feeding mine Purina One and had no problems with it, but the ingredients grossed me out a little bit, so I shopped around. I am limited as to what foods I have access to and also by budget, but I am currently feeding Natural Life. It's an allergy formula, even though mine don't have allergies, I liked the ingredients for the price.
