When Rescue Goes Wrong

It's a glaring example of what can happen even when the owner, who is also the breeder in this case, does everything right.

I want to know what all the right things are and make sure I exceed every possible criteria.

Do you realize how close we here have been to Piper's story or maybe Drake's story? We have had a couple threads on shelities getting out. They were thankfully quickly recovered. What if they had been us? Here?

All I can say is Cubby is getting chipped tomorrow and not when I get him neutered as I planned. That chip will be registered tomorrow night. We all had a bone chew dental cleaning. I ordered antlers. They will all chew. Often. No one ever is going to say my dogs have poor dental hygiene. Frightening. Just frightening.

I am, of course, combining Piper's story with the CA shelties.

I think, it's not that they are abused, not taken care of. It is some of the rescues see beautiful well-bred dogs coming in and know they can make money on them. Microchips can migrate. Collars can be taken off. My two girls have the new rabies tags with the smart phone icon that can be scanned and connected to SOS Lost pets, provided they have their collars on. We can do everything right and still have a problem. I refuse to travel too far with them, because as one person, there is always a chance of one of the three getting away on me, no matter how careful I am.

You're so right. Piper is microchipped, papered, registered, tagged and was 10 minutes from home when she was picked up. There has to be another reason this dog has mysteriously not been returned to her rightful owner.

it really is sanctioned dog theft. Very scary indeed.

Kidnap a family member of mine at your own peril and yes Sca and Spitfire are family. Kudos to all those that helped in case #1 though.

Sheep of Blue: You and I think similarly. The stuff we are reading here suggests that even if we update all information to a "T", someone can still hijack our companions. The Ohio case is clear - the lady does NOT intend to return the dog. Legal or not, an armed midnight raid would be in MY future.

Sadly, some rescues are run by people who are in it for the ego trip...not for remotely what is best for the dogs who come under their care. Working in rescue has been a very eye opening experience for me...and sadly often not in an upbeat way.

I have to believe that with legal action a dog like little Piper will be returned to her rightful owner...but it shouldn't have to get to that extreme. Unless there is something legit that we don't know as to why this rescue won't release this little dog, I hope once this is resolved that they will be out of business permanently.

This is a no-brainer. That woman is guilty of theft, and perhaps insanity. Who in their right mind would keep a dog when the true owner has been identified? Midnight raid. Failing that sue her to within an inch of her life. And that shelter should be shut down pronto. Wonder how many other dogs never got "identified" to her satisfaction?

How do we know that Piper is still alive or with this woman??? It's seems quite odd to me that she wouldn't hand him over especially in view of legal action being taken by the owners. She may have adopted her out and the dog is already been spayed.......or worse. Has there been any sighting of this dog on her property??

Joanne - she refuses to say where the dog is. No one seems to know. I suspect she has been moved out of state and spayed. It will be interesting when she has to provide the dog to the courts.

This is what I fear too... but honestly, if someone spayed or neutered one of my dogs, as long as I got them back, I wouldn't care. Though, I'm not in any way a breeder. But I have a feeling the feelings are mutual.
