Spruce: Uhm, hai, got food? errr.. maybeee... but no thanks for the offer... I may try it... but then I get unsure and uhm.. no, thanks after all!"
Toffee: "N to the hellz NO,
NO, NEVERRRR, WHOOOO ARE YOUUUU?"
When I was away visiting family in Germany last year Toffee would work for my friend and Instructor in class without issues! But omg I can't be anywhere near if somebody was trying to work with him that wasn't me...
Have tried it with Spruce, who's in love with Sheltie friends of mine, a Mother Daughter team, he goes all totally cutesey gaaga over them whenever he sees them, he did a few obstacles for them at a fun match... but even with them he became very unhappy and kept looking for me. I don't push it, as if it's not fun for him, I don't deem it important to try harder to make him like it.
In other words Shelties aren't border collies, lol. They don't work for the love of work, but to work with YOU...
Shelties are usually SO in tune with their handler, I think you'd have to work on it and make it part as a routine, I like what Caro explained, to make it work
