Zulu Not Eating

I was able to find out that the injured Sheltie survived, and is expected to have a full recovery.
 
Over the last couple of days, Zulu has developed runny poops. He is currently eating boiled chicken and rice. I was not too concerned given the events last week. Last night he woke me up whining to go out. Never done that before. Let him out, and he had a big runny poop. Came back in, and went right back to sleep. (not me, I was listening for him the rest of the night). Got up this morning, another runny poop. Off to the vet we go. A fecal exam has found the culprit. A protozoan named Coccidia! The vet let me look into the microscope, the sample was filled with the bugger's eggs. He was as surprised as I was, as this normally is not common in older dogs, but can infect animals of any age. He probably picked it up on our walks, as a lot of people do not pick up after their dogs. I do not let him get near any poop, but with all the rain we have been having, the runoff water on the sidewalks can be contaminated. He also said a stray cat could have pooped in the yard, and Zulu could have stepped in or ate the poop. He got a double dose of meds today, and 8 more days of meds should clear him up. Got to keep him on his home turf, as he is currently a Coccidia producing machine!:gaah
 
I'm glad you found the source of Zulu's problem! I hope he's cured quickly. One thing I found out when dealing with coccidia is that you have to clean up your yard thoroughly to get rid of it. Not just pick up the poops....spray the area with a hose and if it's runny, use something stronger (bleach or vinegar) on the spot. It can be tough to get rid of!

Thanks for the tip! You can never get up all the runny stuff. Should I use bleach/vinegar full strength or dilute it a bit?

The equation that people who work in the septic industry use is one part bleach to 10 parts water when they have a cleanup to do. This is what I have used in my yards...it doesn't kill off the grass and it does the job.

I have never used vinegar, so maybe someone else can give you the answer on that use.

When our Shay came home as a pup with every single worm and protozoa nasty known to dogdom, I had the husband put on discardable clothing, attach one of those garden hose fertilizer things, and handed him a bleach bottle. We went with the standard 1:10 or thereabouts and hosed down the dog area. Granted, it's gravel rather than grass, but the other dog did not catch any of it. Icky, coccidia. Not hard to treat either.

Good idea! I was thinking of using a garden sprayer and treat as I picked up, but this way I can treat the whole back yard, and then use the sprayer to spot treat as needed. Thanks again Sheltie Nation Team!!
