15 year old Indy's vision and other health problems

Janet, my heart breaks for you. This is probably one of the hardest decisions you'll ever have to make as a pet owner. I was always told that your dog will let you know when it is his/her time. I know you will make the right decision when the time comes.

Janet, last summer when my cat Panda was having a particularly hard time with his diabetes I battled as to what to do. But one day, I just knew he had had enough. It was evident in his eyes and he was barely able to get around. It was a tough decision, but I knew it was the right one.

I'm sure you will know when the time is right. I feel for you as this is the hardest thing to do.

You are going through too much these days with your little brood of shelties. I pray that things get easier for you!

Janet I had been with my clients more times than I care to remember and 2 times myself. It is never easy to know when the time is right. Deafness and blindness is so common in our older guys. I believe a dog that is eating well, not vomiting or have diarrhea, breathing ok, can get up on there own(even if it is somewhat slow),and wants to be with their family still has good quality of life regardless of the medical issues they face. Of course, owners who are in touch with their dog as you are, I always have faith they will make the decision when it is best. As long as we always put their needs above our own,we can't go wrong. I hope Indy has many more health months/years ahead.

Janet, I remember going day by day with Skye,- is this day when it's all too much for her? I discovered I really hated having the power to make this decision, even tho it is so merciful, really. As a nurse I wish we could help suffering people out this way but it feels like a huge responsibility.

I too say Indy will let you know when it's just not worth it anymore. Skye was barking at a knock on the door her last day, but then she crashed that night and it was time.

Love him for all your worth right now and cling to those good memories.

My heart goes out to you
Sharon

I have no advice, but reading this post makes me want to go and hug my pup one more time and say how blessed I am to have him with me... every moment counts...
serenity and peace for you and Indy!

My God Janet, you and your family have really been up against it lately! :(

Like others on the forum, I've been in this situation before too. And I agree with them, Indy will let you know when it is time.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and your furkids, I will add Indy to the list as well.

Janet, My heart goes out to you, knowing how hard it is watching our fur kids getting old and having such problems.
But like the other's have said you and Indy will know when the time is right to say Goodbye old frend.
Our prayers and well wishes are with you and your family.
Sylvia & our 4 shelties.

Janet I feel your pain and it is so hard when they get older. Our Maggie is 13 and 7 months and I can see a change in her in the last few months but she is doing well for her age. I know you will do the right thing WHEN the time comes. We are here for you. Sounds like Indy is doing pretty good given his health issues.

Thank you everyone for your support and advice.

Today's been a mixed day....he woke up well and stood without assistance.....went out and got lost on the deck behind the grill again. Ate well...took a nap. After the rain he went out into the yard when everyone took a run while I was picking the garden. He came down the stairs on his own and took a brisk stroll around the yard, and came back up with everyone else. He sat in the kitchen and begged for some cucumber slices like everyone else. But later..ooops; bladder accident in the kitchen. [sigh] The diuretic really helps the CHF; but it plays havoc with keeping the house clean. Right now he is following Alan around the house which irks Alan a bit as he turns around and nearly trips over Indy at his feet; but Alan's been philosophical about it since I pointed out that Indy is following smell & contact with us or one of the other dogs as he can't see well enough otherwise.

Patience and compassion indeed are gifts when dealing with our senior companions. Good for Indy, though in hanging with the pack.
