2011 ASSA Nationals

Now that it has been brought up I am curious about this as well! How do you qualify for rally, agility, and obedience at the nationals? Is there some kind of set score you must obtain or a certain level you must be at before you are even considered?

How are the comformation dogs selected? Can any sheltie go, or do they have to have their CH first?

Yes, I would like to know the answers to all of these questions. One, if there are requirements, that will give Mr. Duncan and I goals for the next 20 months. Two, if he is ineligible, I need to start fashioning an invisible cloak about 13" high, maybe 18" long...

I can't wait for the show in 1012, my in-laws live just north of Orlando. My breeder's club is putting on the show. She says to be well prepared to spend MONEY. I am looking forward to it so much. Lovely I am with you on the Kissimmee thing....drives me nuts.

My in-laws live in Oviedo, which is also just north of Orlando. That is so cool that you have such a connection through your breeder! I will be putting away money now. And hey, we do have some strange (slight homonym) names floating around Florida. I used to live right next to Homosassa, said exactly as you think it would sound.

I read the Agility premium for the 2010 National, and I think the only requirements to enter are that the dog must be registered as a Sheltie with the AKC and at least 15 months of age as of the date of the trial. It's possible that Shelties from other registries recognized by the AKC could be eligible as well, but I'm not certain about that.

To enter at the ASSA National, the dog must be AKC registered. You can show under a Canadian Kennel Club number, as long as the dog is registered with the AKC within 30 or 60 days (a requested extention) of winning any award (placement). You do not need to qualify for any of the events offered, except for the Futurity. The Futurity is a puppy sweepstakes for ASSA members only. Litters, and subsequent puppies are nominated before whelp, and at 3 and 6 months of age. So, to show your dog at the National, just fill out the entry form and send the money! See you there!

Hmmm I have family in Florida... road trip!

If Bailey is good and competing in agility, I may just make the trip in 2012.

I'm not going to get my hopes up, but Celtic Fire and I are looking into whether or not we can attend Nationals next year. With it only being a 10 hour drive for us, we can consider it.

Whether or not we can depends on a few things:
  1. Health of family members
  2. When another event we attend in April is scheduled
  3. What the agility trial dates are
  4. If CJ can attend with us if she's not ready to compete yet (She can usually come with us to AKC agility trials at home.) Though I may enter her in Novice B anyway (I'm going to run her in AKC, I believe, instead of Glen) just to give her ring practice. She should be finished her basic classes by then.

Nationals aren't going to be anywhere near a reasonable driving distance for a few years. We have time to practice.

I really, really need an excuse to go to San Antonio. :biggrin2: I love it there so much! So maybe they will do nationals one year in San Antonio or Dallas. If I had family there I swear I would move to San Antonio.

When is it coming back to the West Coast? Would I want to fly Koji out there? I mean, I'd HAVE to fly. I'm in SoCal. Road trip in April would probably kill me. And Florida is even further. But then, Koji would be more experienced, hehehe. Koji wouldn't know what to do in rain, it's hasn't rained much here this year.

Does anyone know when the premiums typically open? How neat! I wanna go. I am going to try to get to our local Sheltie Specialty. The club said it'll probably be in November. I'm keeping an eye on it. It'd be so neat to see sooooo many Shelties!

I wanna go to St. Louis. Think if I forgo my Derrett seminar I can go to St. Louis instead? So neat! Wish I could've been ready when they were in AZ. Now THAT would be driveable.

Oh wow. It's only one day of agility. Do they run just one of everything? Okay, not worth it for me to go to St. Louis for that. :( boo.

Ohmigod. :eek2: {faints}

That's like 30 mins from my house. I have to get into that one!!! Yes yes yes!!! I will have to get into THAT one. NO airfare, no hotel. Oh man. April 14-20 is ON MY CALENDAR!!!!

Got to, got to, got to get into that one. And by then, Koji will be almost 6. He should be a star by then (or something better than now).

I'm even more excited now. LOL

ETA: I'm sick sick sick.

I'm a bit jealous there. So far St. Louis is the closest I've seen it to PA and that's still a 10 hour drive. Kissimmee is nearly 17 hours (though I'd probably only drive to DC and take the Amtrak Autotrain down to Florida from there if their rules for traveling pets was decent).
