Brought my puppy home today

Hi,
I'm new to the boards and have a lot to learn! I have already spent the past few months browsing the boards and have learnt so much already. We brought home our first puppy today, an 8 week old tri coloured sheltie, that we named Alta. the car ride home was fun, she threw up a couple times :( but the rest of the day has been awesome, went to the bathroom outdoors every time we took her out :smile2: Will she be carsick every time we travel in the car or was today just too many changes for her?

Congratulations on your new baby! My puppy barfed on the way home too. I have gotten her used to the car by taking very short slow and easy trips, like between 5 and 10 minutes. After a while it wasn't so stressful to her and she learned to lie down and just go with it.

Welcome and Congratulations with your little Alta.

Agree with short trips to start with, but do not wait to start, maybe just go in the car and start it if short trips still is too much in the beginning.

Minnie has never been carsick, but she very rarely lies down even on several hours drive

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on your new arrival!

It's not uncommon for puppies to be carsick, especially on their first trip. Hanne and Phoebe's mom are right...start slowly with short trips. Time trips so Alta hasn't just eaten. Almost all puppies grow out of carsickness in a short time.

Have fun with Alta and enjoy puppyhood!

It sounds like you have a wonderful little pup in Alta...congratulations!

Ditto the advice on short, happy, frequent car rides so she learns that riding in the car is not something to be nervous about.

Congratulations on your new baby Alta. May she bring you much joy -- and stop throwing up. :wink2:

P.S. Nothing throws up as casually as a puppy.

Ditto again, short drives... Even if it is just down the driveway and back up!
My sister's rescue sheltie over 6 years always threw up. Short rides helped her and she no longer has any issues riding in the car! Good luck!

Congrats on your Alta tri getting a home with you! Thanks for doing your homework!!! Wonderful that you care enough to inquire for the best course of action on Sheltie Nation! The best group of sheltie owners ever! They are always there for you!

Hopefully your puppy will get use to traveling by car soon. My shelties love to ride with me and we have gone on long trips together from the Canadian border to the tip of Florida. At home they go almost every where with me and love it. Good luck with your new puppy.

Welcome to the forum! I just wanted to echo the idea of exposing your pup to the car in small, positive doses.

We travel a lot with our dogs and for the first few months our latest edition threw up in the car almost once every trip. Eventually, he just grew out of it, to our relief!

I have to chime in, that you picked the best ever breed, but then some of us on here are quite biased-but with good reason.:biggrin2: Motion sickness for pups is not uncommon, and mine have all outgrown it. There are times though it happens in adult life. Have your sheltie kit ready is my two cents. I always have the sheltie bag of necessities in the car because you gotta be prepared with fur babies. And even on walkies, I try have my pockets full of stuff to be prepared. But please note I have lil monsters, they are a handful, so I don't travel light because I have learned it pays to be proactive.
