Cody has a shoulder injury

He already knows sit-pretty, high five, roll-over, spin,& weave. I need ideas!!!!!

What about back up, bang, or bow? Or you could teach him to interact with a box or a stool (stand in it, 2 feet on, rotate around it, etc...)--though I'm not sure how active he is allowed to be.

Teaching a young dog new tricks

Sheltiemom4 I can feel your anxiety. What a handful you have and Cody must be going stir crazy.

Sock is a good game and one that I played often with Seamus when he couldn't run around anymore.

You just put your hand inside Dereks sock, manly men socks are best I have found. You make up a game and spin it over his head, under his feet, pat the ground with it and play as if you are going to grab him. It doesn't take much to get them going but he will play in place if you control the sock.

I do hope that soon you will have a diagnosis that clears everything up for you and Cody.

Best,

Kate

Angie I am praying the vet can come up with an answer to Cody'd problem soon.

What if you got Cody one of the puzzle games you can hide treats in. It may keep his mind and nose active without too much movement.

Angie, I hope you will be getting good news from all those tests. I would be so overwhelmed if I was in your position but it seems that the vet is doing everything to help Cody. I'm confident it will turn out for the best!

As for tricks, here are a few ideas other than the ones mentioned by Corbinam:
  • I taught Kyara to paw at me when I say ''Who's the best'' (lol)
  • You could do some targeting or touches on your hand or on a target you can place a few feet away from Cody.
  • I often play Hide Kyara's favorite toy. I put her in a sit and stay, take her toy and go hide it in a room. Started with easy spots like right on the floor of a room, eventually placing it behind a door, etc.
  • I like to teach Kyara the name of her different toys. For example, I place her giraffe a few feet away and repeat ''go get your giraffe''. Praise when she brings it. Then I do a ball ''go get the ball''. I would then place the 2 objects a few feet away and say ''go get your giraffe'' or ''ball'' and if she brings me back the wrong one I say ''Noooo'' and repeat the ''go get your giraffe'' (really insisting on the name of the object). When she finally brings me the right one I praise, treat and/or tug with her.
  • Kyara kept on bringing her toys to play tug or fetch to BF when we were watching a movie. So BF got annoyed and said ''Bring it to Mommy!'' then, Kyara thought long and hard, turned to me and brought me the toy. So we have been doing a combination of ''Go get your (insert name of toy) and bring it to (insert mommy or daddy)'' whenever she is restless and we don't feel like getting into an intense game with her. It really tires her out to try to figure out which toy she needs to bring and to whom.

Hopefully these tricks and games can give you a few ideas that will keep Cody busy. I'll be sending positive thoughts for good news and fast healing.

No news yet.....I couldn't get him down there (about a 45 min. drive from home) till last thurs. Test results due back tomorrow. I'm SO hoping for good news.....

It's been really hard on him. Today I had him on a leash in the front yard and the other three were out back in the fenced area. I walked over to the fence with him to talk to Sadie and they started play bowing at each other thru the fencing. I feel SO sorry for him that he can't run and play like a normal dog.
