Colon Cancer

We are still waiting to hear from the specialist. The vet did discuss with us the option of sugery....but it really depends on the extent of the cancer. I want to thank each and every one of you that are praying for Dakota. We are hoping for something positive. Dakota still eats, plays, has maintained weight, and acts like he always did. He really does not act sick. He just turned 7 yrs. old. The only reason we took him is because he has been having trouble going to the bathroom. He would just sit outside and strain for a couple minutes and then he would use the bathroom. We never figured anything like this  We are ALL hoping for positive news today...I will keep everyone updated!!!!

I am not 100% certain what test they did because my dad took him. I know they did a complete physical and rectal exam. The vet did feel a lumpy mass in his colon and pulled out alot of blood. I do not know if they ran a blood test on Dakota. The specialist is the one who is going to go in depth with everything (outcome, sugery,etc.). I am really hoping the 1st vet is wrong and it is just something else or nothing at all  Hopefully we will hear something soon!!!!

Thanks for the update , Becky.

My Prayers remain with Dakota and your family during this trying time of waiting. Please St. Francis intervene on behalf of Dakota to Our heavenly Father. I ask this in Jesus's name. Amen

Sheltie hugs to you and your Parents and Dakota.

Becky, I'm praying for you and Dakota. Don't give up hope. My Ivy, age 10, was diagnosed this spring with bladder cancer. She will go outside and squat and squat and squat for ages. My vet, who ultrasounded her several months ago said at that point the tumor was taking up a quarter of her bladder. She is on two kinds of chemo medication, which are liquids I give her daily. The prognosis for bladder cancer is not good, and life expectancy is a matter of months. However, Ivy is doing remarkably well on her medication with no side effects. She hardly ever wets in the house now, eats and plays with our other Shelties just like she always has. In fact, she usually instigates the play!

It really is true that dogs don't know they are sick. I hope the same is true of Dakota. If he can be treated and isn't in pain, he could do just fine. Hang in there, and keep us posted. We'll be thinking about you. Hugs!

Question ?? Are you planning on a Chemotherapy ? This is a very controvertial issue. Some owners Love their dog so much they will put the dog thru this. I am in the Health care field and I know Chemotherapy better than anyone. and I personally think this is Not beneficial to the dog unless there is a hope of Complete Remission or Cure.
If there is no chance of cure, i would just use the pain medicines and put the dog down when the time comes...
