Colonel Underpants: The New Chapter

I am sure trini has already given you tons of advice on harnesses, but beyond the help me up harness that has a separate but lift, I use both the webmaster and front range harness from ruffwear.
The webmaster is better for helping Gavin along, lifting him over things, etc. the front range is good just in general since Gavin is unbalanced now and normal collar leashes can create some not so good situations where he has fallen/slipped. It is super easy to get into (2 clips so no lifting of any legs to get in and out of) and has decent coverage.

I also have Gavin is ruffwear griptex boots on his rear legs to give him better traction often times for longer walks outside. It is a balance cause the paw pads need use to keep from getting too soft, but until they do get roughed up a bit Gavin slips more.

Gavin says naps are a good thing ....woof woof!

I'm honestly so happy for you all that the surgery went well. Yes you will both have a few challenges to overcome but it will be so rewarding watching Beckon overcome them all and thrive! Take care and Monty sends a high paw!

Chris, I know how hard it can be to keep a little guy on limited activity for the first couple of weeks and that is why having him always on lead when outside is a huge help. Right now his body needs basically total rest. He is having to find a new way to balance and it puts his body out of line from what the muscles in his body are used to and the muscles and ligaments need time to slowly adjust to the new demands being put on them to avoid possible injury to the remaining back leg. The recommendation I got for Sketch from the rehab specialist was the only activity he should be allowed to do for 2 full weeks post surgery was going out in the yard on lead just to do his business...no running, no jumping and no walks. Then on week 3 start short walks still on lead. extending distance being careful to note if he seems sore or too tired the next day...and start special exercises for core strength. His entire body, spine, etc., have to realign to compensate for the loss of one leg. Once past the 5- 6 weeks mark he should be able to be back to pretty much normal activity, running, playing, getting up and down from furniture.

Hugs to you and Beckon, Trini

I had Gavin on a BOSU a lot earlier in our now quite long journey.
I also had a much cheaper and smaller disc that did similar stuff.

its amazing what dogs will do for treats!
the rehab vets said Gavin (who HATED the water treadmill) did really well with dry exercises.
and those are easy to do at home :)
its amazing how they learn to compensate!

I may take a look at that Ruffwear harness. We have boots, and once he's more mobile, I'll haul them out.

I'm exhausted. Beckon hasn't peed since he came home. I think he's just so stoned. He's also having trouble ambulating, and I think that's the meds, too. I'm not going to give him the Buprenex tonight; there's absolutely no swelling or seepage, and I would like to get his mind and body working. We're going in to the vet tomorrow just for a check on the elimination issue.
Meanwhile, Nurse Layla is watching over her little brother. (My friend says that collar looks like it should have "SS Titanic" stenciled on it. )
