Does Your Sheltie Ever Bark in Protest when Training?

Well, ehm,,, you make me feel like Everett is defective. He only barks when in full play, or when doing something fun, like "get the mail?" chasing birds, or an occasional bark if someone arrives.
Other than that, if he doesn't wish to do something he will just stare at you. If you force him to "come" then he will move in s-l-o-w-m-o-t-i-o-n. Agility would be near impossible with him.

You just haven't found his motivator! You'll be surprised - Romeo was like that! Call him to come and he does it slowly, no running towards mum like his life depended on it. SIGH. BUT I've figured out what makes him tick and he is loving Jumpers (like agility) classes! He doesn't bark during class too! How old is Everett incidentally?

I must have a strange dog - she hardly ever barks. When I first got her, I was wondering if she ever would. The breeder told me that Shelties have an off switch - she had about 7 in her house when I went to get Emma. She told them to stop barking and they all did at the same time. Emma is starting to bark now but it is such a tiny little bark. It started with a little yip and has now grown a bit. She doesn't bark when training though, just gives the Sheltie look.

Noah on the other hand had a very deep bark - it sounded like a huge dog. The squirrels loved to tease him and we had to constantly quiet him down so the neighbours didn't complain.

Oh mine stop barking when I tell them. They(especially Ember) just like to start on their own.:smile2: Funny thing is Ember never barks during shows. She has a public personality, one she tries hard to maintain. "I'm cute and innocence ,I'm not a problem trust me.:wink2: Do you had any food you'd like to share with me?" It usually works.

Everett is 9.
Is motivator-- goodies, cookies treats and the ball.

Well, thank Heavens Ellie's screaming is down to occassional yelps of protest during training and sometimes we have 100% quiet! However, she hasn't been worked in the neighborhood yet, just in the backyard. The reason is that I am literally afraid of her "screaming" because there will be a lot of distractions. The reason I am afraid is obviously having people think I am hurting her. If I was in a stranger's shoes and I saw someone walking their dog and heard it screaming as if it was being beaten, I know how I would react. Especially if I could not see us clearly, only hear her. If they could see us and paid attention they could SEE she wasn't getting hurt. But that SCREAMING..................:uhoh::eek2::no:

You've made just great strides in a short time. I bet that if she tries yelping it will only be a few times, and it's even possible that the distraction of working on the street will require so much focus from her that she may not remember to scream. Yeah, let's go with that theory.

The smarter the dog, the more they will protest at times when they don't want to do things:wink2:

Cadbury doesn't bark, but he has all manner of ways of trying to manipulate me during training. One of his favourites is coming into a sit beside me, but sitting a little further back than my leg. Without thinking I have stepped a fraction back to be level with him. So next time he sits a bit further back, until we are edging our way backwards across the classroom!

Then there is the lagging, usually when we are doing walking exercises and he gets bored, so he will lag. Even if I slow down he will walk even slower - it is so frustrating!

Or the times he just puts the brakes on and will NOT move!

Stubborn and willful are just two names for him! BUT when he does want to work that boy is a star. He is improving with age and less and less does he play up in class. He is becoming more laid back and happy to let me take the lead. I keep getting told he has potential, so maybe having a stubborn, smart dog has its up-sides?

Barking

Both my dogs bark when working all the time. Sting in class if not be handled right will bark like what do you want me to do.

Yes, Bentley does this too. He's not "screaming" per se, but he does have a frustrated bark. If I don't give him directions fast enough, or if he tries something a few times and doesn't get a treat, he barks and gets frustrated.
