Dog Barriers

My house sounds like yours barb...as soon as you walk in there is a gate at the top of the stairs with a towel over it so the dogs cant see out and bark at everything that moves...than a crate next to the stairs, kitchen has 2 huge mats for them to lie on 2 water bowls (the cats dont like dog spit:rolleyes2:) an assortment of dog bowls,cat bowls I actually installed a shelf under my island to hold them all and 2 food containers and atleast at any given time one bag of dog food on the counter,the bedrooms each have a crate in them and various toys/bones. next the living room has a huge sectional (its doubles as a sheltie playground) there is another mat a raised cot bed, and 3 toy bins that are always half full as there are toys everywhere both inside and outside and a folded up expen cat feeding bowls up on the windowsill so the dogs cant reach and kitty condo. than onto the deck via a dog door, that is fenced in so I can keep them either on or off the deck that leads to 2 seperate fenced runs/yards with strewn about balls/toys that make mowing the lawn all that more interesting, followed with holes/craters/mudpits and torn up lawn!! I think it funny you see the front of my house which is spotless with lush green thick lawn no spots holes etc and than you hit the front door and its downhill LOL:yes: ohhh well
 
I used baby gates, x pens and crates...
We had a invisible fence in Michigan and I had good results with it...Now my dogs were never out there alone..but they could romp all over while we were out in the yard with them. We had a big dog run with a doggy door into the garage..it was a 3 stall one..and they one stall "fenced" just for them..so they went in there in good weather when we left for a few hours.
Here we have a nice fenced garden..no doggy door, so I go out with them. When we leave for a few hours and they can't come with us..they go in the basement...its all cement floors and tile..so if they have to go...its easy clean up...they have never done that tho!! yea!! LOL

I have a baby gate outside that blocks off our porch so Smudge can't escape. I've been told it's coming down though, because the UPS/Fed EX people insist on jumping over it to put packages on the inside of the porch instead of the outside. Mom is afraid that they're going to fall and make us pay their medical bills. :mad: So now I will REALLY have to watch Smudge outside.

Inside there are no barriers. It's a free for all. Smudge eats in the kitchen so I place a fan in the kitchen door to block his way out so he will eat and not play. After he eats he's free to go.

I would like something to block off the bathroom though. He insists on sitting to watch you until you come out. :uhoh: I'm getting complaints from other family members. I personally think they should just shut the door. :rolleyes2:
 
I've got to agree with you on closing the bathroom door, when they are using it. Years ago a guy asked me over for our first date, so he could cook dinner for me. I was really impressed. He lived alone with his Irish Setter. When I got there, he was getting dinner ready, and went to use his bathroom. When he closed the bathroom door, the Irish Setter went crazy, barking, howling, jumping up and down, and scratching on the bathroom door. I'm sure all the neighbors heard it too. Boy was the guy embarrased!

Thank you for reminding me to close my bathroom door when I use it. It could be pretty embarrassing if I don't teach Buddy he has to stay out in the hall and be quiet.
 
When I first got Lacey I would contain her to part of the laundry room when I needed to leave. I would open up a cabinet door (where only dirty clothes were stored) and put a fold out table in front. She couldn't push it over because of the legs and the cabinet door kept her from pushing it out. As she got older and more wise to the workings of doors I would just contain her in the laundry room. I only did the crate for a couple weeks and then only the first week during the day and the rest at night. That was more because I wanted her to feel secure in a new place and she wasn't housetrained at the time.

Slowly I worked on letting her have short periods of the run of the house while I was outside. Now, she can be left and she has the complete run of the house. Though it does cost a treat every time I leave.
 
When Sadie was a pup I used baby gates but she pretty much has free rein of the house now. When we go to work we crate her but if we're only gone for a few hours we let her stay loose in the house.

Sadie often comes into the washroom with me, but not always. She some times tries to follow company into the washroom too but they just tell her no and shut the door. She waits for them quietly in the hallway :rolleyes2:
