Drontal - Bad reaction?

yes you are correct giardia is a parasite not a worm, however they are now finding that some forms of giardia are growing restistant to the " normal" course of wormers used to treat it, they normally use panacur which is a wormer to treat however certain strains of Giardia are not even touched by Panacur anymore, I almost lost one of my puppies to Giardia its really a nasty little bug! It took her just over a year to fully bounce back from it although it still had taken an effect on her body and robbed it of so much im sure I will continue to see the after effects of it the rest of her life.

Wow...I had no idea it could be deadly. The cases I know of was more like a few weeks on meds, and back to normal.. That's really scary. Just one more thing for us furparents to worry about.... It sure seems like there are so many more "hazards" for dogs than there used to be. Maybe it's just that people are much more informed than we used to be. I'm glad you didn't end up with the worst scenario with your little one!

yea, actually I was just at the vets with my new one for his shots and he was telling me about one of his puppies (he breeds boxers) that had the same thing and he also had a heck of a time getting rid of it, he said when he came in the room OHHHHH I was thinking of you recently...hmmppff little did I know it was because of Giardia...nothing like being associated with poo:eek2::lol:

I've never been so happy about poop! Bailey finally had her first bowel movement since awful diarrhea last night. I've been nervous all day. I didn't know if the diarrhea would continue or not. Well, after a whole day of nothing, she finally had a bowel movement and it was solid! Yay!

Isn't it amazing how happy we get over doggie poop?!?! :biggrin2:
I am glad to hear that things are going back to normal!

That's exactly what I did this morning - get all happy about a poo. Deska pooed this morning - his first one since the runs stopped on Tuesday - and it is still a bit soft but it still came out in one piece and I could pick it up and it didnt leave residual on his butt! Woohoo!

Just saw the Lysol comment Lysol is toxic to animals. If you do use it make sure to wash it extremely well so its all off. You can use either a bleach mixture (which I prefer) or an ammonia mixture.

If you will remember at the time I was doing this a few things were happening:

1. Smudge got banished from the house for a little bit.
2. I was slowly starting to train Smudge away from his crate anyway.

Smudge was a fast learner and since he was house trained very quickly, the only time he has to go in his crate is when nobody is at home/or he has a random surgery. I didn't know that Lysol was toxic to dogs. Well, I guess if you think about it then it could be toxic to people to a certain degree. :uhoh: So, yeah. Maybe hold off on the Lysol. Smudge really wasn't around any of the areas I was cleaning since he got banished for a little bit. I'm sure they make some kind of bacteria killing cleaner that is safe for dogs. I have one I use on my floor if my dog goes to the bathroom inside the house and I have to clean it up. They also make house spray for fleas that is safe for dogs.

I don't know about other worms, but people can get tapeworms. It's hard to get them though. You'd have to swallow/eat a flea that has eaten the tapeworm larvae. I was really worried about that, too. I had worms on the carpet, worms all in my bed (it was GROSS), worms in my Kleenex box, everywhere. I never want to go through that again. :dead: Before you ask, yes I did blow my nose on those Kleenexes before I knew what the worms were!

Poor baby and his random surgeries. Hugs to both you and Smudge.

I use vinegar for almost everything when it comes to the dogs. Mess on the floor, stop chewing that (all of my dining room chairs have vinegar sprayed on their legs to keep puppy teeth away)... I did use a little spray lysol on Duncan's crate when we got it - but he wasn't home for anther week.

I would hesitate to use a cleaning product with ammonia in it, as urine has ammonia and it might encourage them to use the area you just cleaned as a potty place.

You beat me! I was going to say EXACTLY the same thing - both for the ammonia and the vinegar. You can also use bleach on items that it doesn't matter if they fade. But vinegar for the rest.

Muahaha... next thing you know, I'll be a tenth of your post count!!

I cleaned her crate with clorox anywhere hard surface and then i used boiling water to wipe to off. She stepped in poop and got a lil on the carpet. So I did the same thing on my carpet. I vacuumed my house yesterday and today. Hopefully that will suck up any eggs, if there were any. I washed her blankets and toys on a hot/cold cycle. Should I throw them out? or will washing them be good enough?

I cleaned her paws with soap and water. That's what makes me nervous. her paws.

I'm not sure what to do about the wood floors. She's never defecated there, but what if she tracked some on her paws. You think I can mop the floors with hot water?
