Gavin's dotage

sigh..after 3 weeks of soaking his bad paw to heal up his knuckles, a new sore has appeared overnight.
literally. saturday was beach day and while it was red it was not scabbed or open.
now it is a 1/2 inch round scabby sore (I don't think it's very deep, thankfully).
its where the outer knuckle of his paw is, pretty high up. it is covered by his bootie but well below the velcro closure.
no idea why as that is not a pressure point for a dog who doesn't actually walk on that leg beyond a few ginger tippy toes.
so a few more weeks of soaking.....

Is it possible he’s developed an allergy to the booties? Could you find one in cotton or some natural fibre? What about using polysporin on a gauze pad several times a day initially to get the healing started? I’m just thinking my sister had infections and sores similar in an incision following surgery and that’s one of the things they did. Also betadine diluted to the colour of weak tea is a good antiseptic (Dr.Karen Becker recommends it for hot spots) and would help it heal faster. Poor guy…that sore looks painful.
 
he gets a sterile gauze wrap, a sock, and then the bootie. so no on the allergy (and its the same bootie brand we have used for years).
and he doesn't really feel that foot, so it doesn't hurt him (but looks terrible).
Oh, and there was no blood on the gauze either.
we are soaking in salt water, and I have antibiotic cream to use. He was just on 3 weeks of a broad spectrum antibiotic for his knuckle wounds.
I just don't know what it would be rubbing on to create that since he doesn't use that paw. his knuckles I get, they drag.
we are going for bootie-less time and lots of soaking. just the gauze and sock unless he needs to go outside.
 
I’m just trying to think like a dog and wondering does he lay on that side and is it possible that it’s pressure from his rib cage or hip? Just wondering if he’s laying on it in some way. I know they make hip pads for seniors, perhaps you need to add some sort of paw padding as a preventative?
It is a strange spot to get a pressure sore.
 
it literally appeared in less than 2 days. it wasnt there saturday afternoon when i did post beach clean up, then it was monday.
i know it looks like a pressure sore, but those take time, right?
his behavior hasnt changed recently either.....
and he usually lays on the other side, with his good leg closer to the ground. otherwise he has problems getting back up.
 
well, Gavin has been pretty perky today.
Had a nice little walk along the lagoon, he made it about as far as he ever has since he got sick over Christmas.
and he came to see me in the bathroom when I was showering, been at least a month on that one.
