Gavin's Never Ending Dotage (Part 2)

Gavin has figured out how to signal he needs to go outside. He stands by the sliding glass door. It is behind my Mom's recliner, but we have rugs back there to help him get back there.
He can even hobble out on his own on the patio.
But he heads straight into the large piles of leaves under Mom's maple tree.
and while there is nothing wrong with him going there per se.....he does bring back A LOT of leaves into the house.

she starts chemo tuesday so we are getting ready for that. monday is bloodwork.
There is the obligatory family drama (my brother thinks Mom should host his family of 4 for thanksgiving... 2 days after her first chemo when she feels like crap and is immuno-compromised.....and her and me should help cook ahead of time and of course prepare the house for their stay...washing sheets/towels....grocery shopping....when his MIL lives 15 minutes away and could very easily host them and they could visit depending on how mom feels... I convinced Mom that them staying in her house was a bad idea so now they aren't coming and are flying the MIL up to see them instead).

hee hee... mom keeps underestimating Gavin based on his being so sedate the first few days.
He was able to go outside on his own (I was in the shower...so Mom let him out). She can't lift him to come back inside so he got to lay in the sun :)
Then at some point he followed her to her bedroom and she closed the door on him. He was laying behind her walker in the corner by her sliding glass doors.
She 'lost' him and couldn't believe he got himself back there.

Pretty spunky for a 3 legged 17 year old Sheltie :) So proud of him.
He pretty much follows me and Mom from room to room all day now.

I'm sorry for the family drama. Sometimes people don't truly "get" the challenges and want to believe things should be they way they dream them not the way they are in reality. I can only say sometimes its a blessing when they leave you to manage your own stuff. As much as your Mom may miss seeing them this holiday she just may not have the energy and this way she can be who she needs to be during her chemo treatments not who others think she should be for their needs.

I must say there have been a few moments in my life where people have so fine we are going to do .... as if it would be a huge punishment for me and I've thought wow thought really sounds great so how do I say this so it sounds like they won and they won't change their minds and come to me anyways?

Gavin sounds amazing. I love when you write about his relationship with your Mom.

I suspect Gavin is as good medicine for your mom as you are, Cindy. There's a lot to be said for comfort dogs!

I'm sorry about the drama with your family. The first rounds of chemo can be tough. You have to wonder what they're thinking. :banghead: Bailey's mom is so right; you're better off on your own. It's not likely she'll feel up to company, much less cooking!

Thanks! It's like my brother is trying to make my mom and me feel guilty over this :(
gaslighting, anyone? I have ordered a thanksgiving meal from the honey baked ham store (mom likes their ham) that I am picking up tomorrow.
We will eat it when Mom feels well enough.
