Gavin's radiation treatment

Gavin has lost weight :(
he is at 29 lbs now...he started out at 33lbs before radiation.
I need to check and see when this happened, but I remember him holding pretty steady throughout. -I called the vet and he started to loose weight when I boarded him the week of christmas. and has been gradually loosing since then.

eating is never an issue with him. I had cut back on his food while he was pretty much confined 24/7. And I have been increasing it since he has been 'freed', but I guess not enough! He is 10 years old, so I had been trying to keep an eye on his weight not creeping up. Who would have thought it would go down?

Maybe he has also lost some of its muscle power now that he could not get so much exercise - muscle weighs more than fat

I am sure some is muscle, but 4 lbs on a 33lb sheltie is a lot of weight.
He feels bonier, too.

I guess I got distracted and just didn't notice the weight loss the past few weeks after radiation ended. So now Gavin gets more food..happy dog!

I did, but it all came back on rather quickly once radiation and nursing ended!

Eating healthy kinda takes a backseat when you are stressed, and I didn't get any exercise, so it was only due to temporary lack of eating.

I think Gavin is doing pretty good :)

OMG - GAVIN is doing FABULOUS! :smile2:

Seeing him run along the shoreline made me cry with glee!

What a great recall you have Mr Gavin!

I am sure the salt water is helping you to heal.

What a wonderful environment you now find yourself in!
You and your mom can heal now and move forward with good times... you both DESERVE it with all you have been through!

Give your mom a lick!

Gavin has great selective recall :)
At least twice each beach visit I have to use the magic word "treat" to get his attention. Almost always when someone else has a chuckit and is throwing tennis balls.

You can see his little naked rear leg..could be months before fur grows back. It does get a little banged up at the beach and I am still moisturizing it daily.

Sadly, our beach doggie friend passed away during Gavin's treatments of sarcoma. I know dogs don't think 'where is my beach buddy lily', but I know he would love to still have her around.

So great to see. I'm so very happy for you and Gavin. What a great result for the intense experience that it was. :hugs

So we have been done with radiation for 2 months.

Gavin is still more tired than normal. He will act crazy normal at the beach and run with me to get the mail (probably because motivation is high). He will go on his normal length walks if I don't 'let' him take a shortcut, but will have small periods where he walks super slow.

I know recovery takes a while, and he is doing really well for a 10 year old dog. Just not quite back to pre-cancer Gavin...
