Gavin's radiation treatment

I am hoping that since I only have 1 more week's worth of antibiotics left that his leg will not have an open sore by then. Also, the soaks should help (breast cancer forums mention them as the only thing that really helps stubborn radiation burns). My understanding from the vet tech is that they will help healing considerably; most dog owners apparently give up on them because their dogs aren't as cooperative as Gavin. He really couldn't be any more cooperative, I am very lucky. His poor sore has to be burning him, yet he allows me to sponge water over it and gently remove the cornstarch crust. I love my puppy monster, he is amazing

Oh my, that image just made me cringe when I viewed it!
Thank goodness only one more day and the healing can begin!

I hope you are stocked up with pain killers for Gavin.
I can not imagine how he keeps such a good attitude.

Virtual hugs... better times to come!:hugs:yes:

Cindy, Gavin is the lucky one to have such a devoted Mom. With your loving care he will heal and hopefully go on to have many more wonderful years with you. :hugs

I got the lowdown on why the paw as soo red yesterday at dropoff this morning. Somehow, while in his run after treatment, Gavin got the white cornstarch off. He either scraped it off or licked it off (with his cone on). They couldn't find the cornstarch bits anywhere and none was on his cone so it is a mystery.

Lesson : Gavin does not want to be in his run all alone and will now be by his favorite vet tech's desk all day. Who do you think won?

When Spirit was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago, the nurse told me that Spirit wanted to be held, so while she was hooked up to her IV getting fluids, the nurse carried her around, holding up the IV bag in her other hand. The effect these shelties have on people is astounding.

So Gavin, my 32 lb Sheltie, can lick his paw around his Large 25 inch e-collar.
I came home from work today (worked half a day), to find his paw completely barren of any cornstarch. Toes, Toenails, everything.

He never did this before, but now that there is super yummy cornstarch, he is licking his paw :( There was a tiny scab type coating on his paw, So I know he isn't licking it to lick it. He is licking it so he can eat the cornstarch.

The radiation vet is not close. No pet stores seem to carry 30 inch cones (XL), much less the cheap lampshade kind. I found a vet a few blocks away with one. But I can't trust Gavin alone for any amount of time. Even the 10 minutes it would take me to go get one. So I have to take him with me, after soaking his paw and applying cornstarch.

Will this never end?

Cindy...you have been so strong and devoted throughout this entire ordeal. Hang tough a bit longer...it will end...but I know you must be beyond exhausted! :hugs

Gavin's paw, sans cornstarch. You can see a bit of scab covering since its not bloody or gooey.

Gavin with his new 30 inch cone. Here's hoping he can't lick his paw with this on!
