Higher Protein = More Energy?

Thats an interesting response to 5 hour energy. Ive used it for long drives and at the March Cluster when I had to work overnight and go straight to the show. It woke me up and made me really jittery. I believe the jitteriness is probably more pronounced in me than most people since I dont drink any form of caffeinated beverage.

This is an interesting thread. Thanks for bringing it up, Randi.

And definitely post the B vitamin analysis from TOTW on her when you receive it.

Thanks!
Danielle

I've been doing some searching online and haven't found any articles on vitamin B and energy, behavior, aggression or hyperactivity.

All I know is that since Bailey has been eating Acana, her behavior has changed. Acana is higher in protein than her old food and appears to have much more Vitamin B complex than other dog foods.

Her changes in behavior are more energy, more barking in the apartment, more leash reactivity and chasing shadows more (especially on my ceiling). I do live in an apartment and walk her in a very busy neighborhood, so there is much more stimuli for her to react to. I'm sure it is much easier for me to detect a behavior change compared to a sheltie, who lives in the country with less to react to.

I'm gonna give it some thought this weekend. I'm trying to wait for TOTW to email me back. If their vitamin B content is less than Acana, I will probably switch Bailey back and see if her behavior changes.

Oh and those studies saying that high protein effects territorial / fear aggressive dogs...Bailey is a territorial dog. Most of her leash aggression is in or around my building. When we see a neighbor on the elevator or in the hallway and right when we walk out of the building or about to walk inside. That's when she usually lunges and barks at people or dogs. She's much calmer when we're out of sight of the building.

I'd say higher protein is great, but only if you give your dog a lot of exercise. I don't really think it makes dogs agressive, BUT they have much more energy, imo. Which might lead to excessive barking etc... I'm doing agility and walking dog every day for few hours, so it's okey for me, but if you want to feed high protein you have to be reasonable w/ the amount. :smile2: If you fed 1/2 cup of TOTW, you should probably feed less Acana.
Also I wouldn't worry about kidneys.... at least not w/ young active healthy dogs. There's no study which would proove this. :wink2:

I received an e-mail response from TOTW regarding the b-vitamins:

Dear Danielle,

Thank you for your inquiry. The vitamin b content is the same in all 4 Taste of the Wild dry dog foods all of them contain the following amounts: Vitamin B1-31mb/kg as fed, Vitamin B2-6.0mg/kg, Vitamin B6-10.0mg/kg as fed and the Vitamin B12-0.11mg/kg as fed. If you have any more questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brookshire

I did a quick glance back at Acana, and it does look like the b-vitamin content on the Acana is significantly higher than the TOTW. Maybe this is the culprit, not the high protein?

ACANA - TOTW
Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 50 mg/kg - 31 mg/kg
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 53 mg/kg - 6.0 mg/kg
Vitamin B3 (niacin) 350 mg/kg - ???
Vitamin B5 (pan.acid) 66 mg/kg - ???
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 43 mg/kg - 10.0 mg/kg
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) 590 ug/kg - 0.11mg/kg (110ug)

The first set of #'s is Acana Ranchlands & the second is TOTW Sierra Mountain. Looks like Acana has 4-5x more vitamin B supplements than TOTW. The TOTW vet did not send #'s for B2 & B3, but I assume they're much less than Acana.

I wonder why Acana has such high B Vitamins compared to other dog food brands. :confused2: I also wonder if it is the high vitamin B supplements that is making Bailey more active and reactive. That's really too bad that Acana adds so much Vitamin B. I really like their company and the food. I'm really disappointed that I have to switch back. :(

PS: I tried to do some research on canine energy and vitamin B and couldn't find any information.

That's interesting about vitamin B, but I don't understand how it could cause hyperactivity. My understanding is that if you're depleted in vitamin B that it can help boost your energy levels, but if there is nothing wrong with your B levels that your body just disposes of the extra B in your urine, that it doesn't cause excess energy.

Are you sure its not just the change in environment? You did move not too long ago and as you mentioned you are walking her in a much busier area. Plus she could be hearing a lot more noise when she's alone?

Toby's change in reactivity didn't happen over night, he became more and more reactive over the course of a few months. He went from living in a rural area to living in the heart of the city. While the city I live in isn't big or overly busy, there are still many more sounds to stimulate him than living in a rural environment.

I switched him to Orijen (even higher protein and probably high B too, since the company that makes Acana also makes Orijen), after his reactivity started to become a problem. Even though we were having on going issues with him I didn't notice he became any worse after we put him on Orijen.

Yes with Vitamin B, you will just excrete the excess amounts, but while it's in your system your body will use it for energy. At least that was my understanding.

I moved in May and Bailey was reactive back then. She was gradually improving through training. I started transitioning her to Acana about a month ago. Me, my roommate and dog walker all noticed this increased energy and barking about two weeks ago. I don't think she barks much when she's alone. She is in her crate and not near the door. Her increase in barking is when I'm home and walking her.

My guess is that not all dogs react negatively to higher protein and vitamin B. Bailey being an high energy reactive dog with already high vitamin B levels is not handling the increase in protein and vitamin B than most other dogs would. She used to be fine with a 30 min exercise in the morning, 30 mins afternoon and 1 hour of agility in the evenings, but lately she is still full of energy after agility class. I think I'm gonna switch her back to TOTW and see what happens. If she calms down, then we know for sure that it was the food.

If you research the new studies on vitamin B-6, your understanding is not correct.

Vitamin B6 can cause nerve toxicity - neuroligical problems. Bailey is getting 4 times the amount of B6 on her new food than her old food.

Really!? That's scary! Thanks, I'll be sure to look that up.
