Housebreaking Woes...

Ya know I was going to ask the other day..how in the heck does one collect a urine specimine from a dog..let alone a female. It must be next to impossible.
i know this isn't funny, but somehow visualizing you with a ruler and a cup, trying to catch a dribble of urine. Gosh I wish you luck.hopefully what you got from the brick will be good enough.

I used to work at a Greyhound track. You use a long-handled cup or ladle. It helps to have a steady hand.

I feel really bad putting her back in the smaller crate. Her head is starting to touch the roof when she stands up.

I'm going to try and get a better odor eliminating spray.

Let me tell you, trying to collect pee in a cup from a puppy is not easy! I tried everything. I tried putting the cup under her, a bowl, a cup taped to a ruler...nothing worked. The second she saw something going under her, she stopped peeing. I had to settle for using a syringe to collect her pee off of a brick.

I think it was BarbV who came up with a genius way of collecting urine. Use a soup ladle. When your pup starts peeing put it under her to catch the pee. Just don't put it back in the drawer afterward with the rest of your kitchen utensils

I keep reading about this urine collection, but I don't get it. A couple of years ago, the Vet said he needed a urine sample and in my mind I saw me running around with one of those plastic glasses between my Fancy's legs. So I said "Well, how do you do that?" The Vet looked at me like I was wierd and said "With a syringe, of course." He whipped out a needle, stuck the syringe near her stomach and collected a yellow urine sample. Why do you have to run around with a ladle?

It's probably some kind of joke that they teach in vet school. That said, I became quite adept at 'capturing' and if it means one less needle stick for my girl, I'm willing to do it.

I was gonna try a ladle, but I read online that you tape a cup to a ruler or yard stick and that's pretty much the same thing. None of my attempts worked lol. I think the problem is I gave her a plastic cup to play with once, so now she thinks all cups are her toy. The second she saw me take out that cup, she stopped peeing and wanted to play with it.

I just got a call from the vet....and she does have UTI. I'm very glad I decided to get a urine exam. I'm going to pick up an antibiotic later today. Poor baby. It must be painful

Problem on the way to solved!!! And weren't we all a big help!!! :rolleyes2:

Glad she is hopefully on the track to improvement, but this thread made me laugh with the urine collections...I had to do it once with my cat...who is an outdoor use no litterbox cat..hahaha neighbors must have thought I was crazy following my cat around waiting for him to squat with a plastic cup! I did it though and even in the pitch dark!LOL!! I must be amusement for my neighbors I swear!

Not me! But I'll take credit anyhow!:wink2: I've been blessed with not ever having had to take a urine sample before. I just can't imagine what my pups would do if I started chasing them in the back yard with a soup ladle! "Excuse ME! Just what do you think you are doing with THAT! You want me to do WHAT?":wink2:

That was exactly Bailey's expression "excuse me? what are u doing with a cup near my bum???"

Hopefully, I never have to collect a urine sample again

When Cleveland was sick, we needed to get a sample and Ron wiped on old frisbee down with alcohol and as soon as he started Ron just pushed the frisbee under him on the ground (Cleve peed girlie style!). Worked like a charm!

And yes, Cleveland looked at Ron like, "you weirdo, get away from me."
