How much does your puppy eat?

When I first brought Smudge home I didn't measure at all. :uhoh: Then I started to measure and he got about 1 cup twice a day. Then I cut it down to 1/2 a cup. My entire family accuses me of starving him. :rolleyes2: I've been told me eats everything off the floor because I don't feed him enough. :dead:

Every now and then I'll give him 3/4 at one of his meals if I feel especially sorry for him. On days I take him to the vet I feed him 1 cup at one meal and 3/4 on the other. Most of the time it's just 1/2 cup twice a day though.

No table scraps for this puppy! :biggrin2: So in other words on a normal day Smudge will get 1/2 a cup of food twice a day.

I hope you don't feel I am hyjacking this thread but I am having signing in problems. I can't start a thread but I can add a reply to an existing one ! ? wierd. Anyway................ I want to ask what is the proper amout of Kibble to feed a 5 year old Sheltie. Burwick weighed 39 lbs at one time and the vet said that was too much. I do have him down to 37 now and aiming for 35. However it is tough to cut back when he stands at his bowl and stares up at me with those big brown eyes!
Thanking in advance for any help.

Good luck on Burwick.

Sca is still eating about 2 cups a day (now Science Diet Puppy but soon to convert to Innova puppy. But he is REAL active :biggrin2: and does not seem to be getting fat. He did go from 9 to 13 at the vets but he was dehydrated at the 9lbs from a puppy flu which I figure is half or more of that (and now he is healthy and doing fantastic)

That is odd about your signing in issues. You might send Kelly a PM to ask if she can find out what the problem is.

Amount to feed depends on a number of things...we know his weight and age, so the remaining question is what food you're feeding him. You would feed less of the high quality premium foods than the supermarket brands. From his weight though, I'd suggest 1/2 cup twice a day with some green beans mixed in for weight loss. But let us know what the food is and we can give you a better idea.

Thanks for the help. BTW I've been talking to Kelly. Seems to be a cookies issue that I will need help with. All I know about cookies is Chips Ahoy.
Back to the pooch issue: I was using Kibbles and Bits till they took out the small, yellow orange pieces that I think were cheeze flavored. Then I went to Kibbles and Bits "Homestyle" which looked just like the original K and B. Then they discontinued those! I phoned the company ---they didn't care.
I tried a variety of brands, all of which Burwick wasn't too crazy about. Then I found a "no name" brand which looks just like original K and B and ----he loves them!
I should add that I am located in eastern Canada, so all of these changes possibly have only happened here.
The info on the no name brand bag says made in the USA and Loblaws Canada [a Canadian grocery giant] The "guaranteed analysis" sticker says:
crude protein [min] 21%
crude fat [min] 8%
crude fibre [max] 4%
Moisture [max] 18%
How does that mix sound? thanks so much for the help. Dale

Glad you are working out the cookie issue, Dale! I'm with you on the Chips Ahoy...

You are on the mark for the fat content of your food. When trying to lose weight, the vets like to see the fat content below 10%. I would caution you though to also read the contents of the food. If it lists "byproducts" and other fillers you are feeding your dog the equivalent of doggie junk food. Are there any natural pets stores around you? Your pup would do better on a high quality lite food and you could feed less. We've had a number of people post links to articles about how to evaluate your pet's food on the site here...here are a few helpful links:

If you can't find quality foods near you, they are available online from several outlets. Let us know if you need more specifics. Good luck!

No natural pet stores here. The listed ingredients don't use the words fillers or byproducts so I hope we are OK. There sure is a lot of ingredients listed however, too many to list here.

Hi Daleford,

I think you can pretty much guarantee that most supermarket brands are not good stuff. No name, etc. is probably the worst of the worst. Kibble N Bits is garbage. The pups probably love these foods because its high in sodium, etc. which they just lap up.

You don't need a natural pet store....almost any pet store will carry most of the better quality food. Where are you in PEI? Is their a Pet Value or similar near you?

Do check out the links that Ann sent and see if they carry any of the 5 or 6 star brands.

If there truly no pet stores close by you, then you can consider ordering online - Ren's or Pet Supply House are two good Canadian options. Worst comes to worst, Purina Pro Plan is kinda the best of the worst, and you should be able to get that at the grocery store.

Or if you are serious about better nutrition for your pup but no ready suppy close to home, you could also consider raw diet or home cooked diet. Not my first choice (because I'm basicly lazy), but a definite alternative.

And also consider the suggestions to add beans, pumpkin, carrots (my dogs love those as treats) to their diet.

Good luck! You did not say how tall your pup was, but 37 lbs does sound a little hefty.

He is 18.5 inches at the shoulder, 28 inch long, nose to bum.
So it is the solium that he likes so much. I thank you for your help and will do some looking. Not a lot of pet stores here.
I will start adding the human foods you suggested. Is adding left over bread or rice OK?
