Your post really touched me, for it reminded me of the loss of our little Boo-Boo in November of last year. He too developed cancer the year before, and my wife, bless her heart, nursed him back to relative health and gave him another relatively good year of life.
Just a little anecdote: last year around December my wife asked what I'd like to have for Christmas, and I jokingly observed that when I was a little boy I had always wanted a snow globe, but no one had ever given me one. On Christmas morning I opened a package from my wife, and wasn't really surprised to find it contained a big snow globe, which I promptly shook and held up with a laugh of amused surprise. I then watched as the snowflakes cleared to reveal, inside the globe, a picture of little Boo-Boo. I'm not ashamed to say that I broke down right then and there and cried.
We now have a wonderful Sheltie named Dickens, and though I'm not really superstitious, I could swear that he's the second coming of little Boo-Boo!
