Oh my goodness, what a scare! They are crafty little critters, aren't they?? Good for you catching it so quickly. So glad to hear Kai is recovering, and thanks for the reminder of how careful we really need to be.

OMG what a scare. Oh boy you did the right thing, ASAP to the vet. I will never forget my friend's kids when they were little. They had her tiny little Yorkie on a M&M treasure hunt. Oh sure this little furkid had a ball finding and eating them, ASAP to the vet.
Sure happy this had a happy ending. Isn't it ironic, can't jump until they get into something their not suppose to.

I thank the good Lord that Kai is ok. Your fast thinking saved his life ! I really believe Ty was looking down on you and protecting you from another tragedy. Sheltie Angels at work !

Yup, the whole thing, and he almost died, and was only semi-concious when we got him to the emergency vet hospital.
What happened was that a friend came over with some brownies and gave everyone one (but the dogs of course!). My bf had set his down on the back of the lounger for a minute to walk the friend to the door. Untill *that very moment* Kai hadn't been able to jump up that high. But by the time we got back seconds later he had it on the floor and the whole thing was gone! That fast, he suddenly *could* jump up on the lounger! By the time we got him to the emergency vet he was only semi-concious. The vet kept him overnight in the hospital and told us that if he didn't die he might have neurological damage...we were terrified! They put him on an IV and gave him fluids and an antidote. They told us that they had him stablized and to call the next morning.
We didn't sleep at all and when we called the next morning they said he was ok and we could pick him up late afternoon. When we got there we could *hear* him before we could see him! We were crying then for relief instead of terror. Now today he's back to himself, thank God.
I just thought I'd post to remind the new puppy owners how fast they change and how important it is to keep chocolate away *at all costs*! I feel so guilty that I didn't catch him or see him...but it only takes seconds...

You got that right! He just figured it out for the first time *right then* - and you know in a way I was kind of proud of him... I wished I could have been there to see him jump up there the first time...
But I can't take all the nice credit everyone has given me, for sure... Right after he ate it I took them outside just to watch and saw Kai begin getting a little worn out, but still wanting to run and play. When we came in he fell right asleep too which was odd because he usually has to go until he's overtired before he'll lay down. So I called the first vet, who told me just to watch him through the night and he'd probably be ok. So we watched him for about another hour while I did various things to check his sleep depth. For a while he was sluggish but got up for treats, then back. But when I put him down on his feet and he practically fell sideways to lay down is we found a different hospital and went.
I felt really guilty about that but you'd be amazed how much can happen in just an hour, and that doctor told us to just watch him overnight! The hospital who treated him was *wonderful*. They took him in immediately, they were very supportive and didn't even 'scold' us! They took really good care of him and even though we didn't have the $1500 that it cost they helped us out through some kind of emergency fund they use to help people in this type of situation. What a blessing.
I also want to thank the forum friend who said, "the most important dog to us is the one in our arms".
I also wanted to send prayers to Barb and Bacca, who's illness came on just around the same time and I wasn't able to check the boards to see what happened. Our prayers for continuing recovery go out to them. Thanks again for all the support, it means so much.

$1500!!!! OMG! I thought it was bad when Bacca had to have his stomach pumped last fall - and it was $600!
I know it's money that I would never begrudge my pup, and the outcome is so totally worth it. But still....! Bad pup!

Thank goodness, not all animal hospitals are of the "money first" bent. When I was laid off in 2003, our basset, Bosley, ate a rock. We didn't know it until two days later, when he obstructed. $1200 later, he had a 3-inch scar on his tummy and a rock in a plastic bag hanging on his cage at the vet's. The vet knew I was out of work and told me to "just pay when you can." How about that? I paid him in plastic and all was well, but I sure appreciated the sentiment. Many wouldn't have cared about my situation. I'm glad that you found one of those in your area.
