Lyme disease

I know I would have been thrilled if Gavin's leg was due to lyme.
Is the weakness still progressively getting worse?
I know my vets threw up their hands and said it must be a tumor on his spine and a MRI would be the only way to know.

Yes Cindy, it's worse this week than it was last week, he tends to go up the stairs at an angle but the last couple is head on and he really struggles on those. I also have to elevate his food and water bowl as he won't eat with it on the floor. This morning he turned his nose up to cheese (pills) and when my mom and I were having coffee he left and went to lay down (at 10:30 am)...this is totally not him.

Oh, Lisa, I am so sorry to hear this news. I just can't believe this is happening. It is just so heartbreaking.
Wouldn't an x-ray show a tumor? Is that what the ultrasound is for?
Keep us updated. Prays and hugs for you and Riley!

Oh dear, Lyme would have been a better answer, treatment-wise. I'm sorry.... I hope the ultrasound at least gives you some answers. What a roller-coaster.

I don't know that an X-ray would show a tumor Gloria, but he had one done about a month ago and that's what showed the enlarged liver.
We had one ultrasound done back in September (at a different vet, that's when this all started) but only thing he said was that the liver had an abnormal 'texture' and that it affected the whole liver.
That's when he also had the high liver enzymes...that's what has me puzzled...his thyroid is good now as are his liver enzymes...
Who knows though, maybe the vet is wrong and it is Lyme....I will continue giving the Doxycycline, she gave me a about a two week supply.
I'll let you know what the ultrasound shows, I'm going to watch it.

Well Riley had the ultrasound and while it wasn't great news, it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected (although it still has to be read by a radiologist). There doesn't appear to be a tumor (he said there were no bulges in the liver to indicate that), there were a lot of dark areas on the liver however. His adrenal glands are good, so no Cushings, kidneys are also good. They too lots of X-rays ...back legs, knees, pelvis and liver. Arthritis in both knees, hips are good and pelvis was good.
It's looking like its liver disease (I'm not going to do a biopsy, at this point I think it'll just tell us what we already know) and arthritis in his back end. Once we get the report tomorrow we can figure out if there are any anti inflammatories we can give him (to see if they help) or any other meds.
I'm also going to research for a homemade liver diet (a raw diet, he already gets one raw meal a day)...I don't trust the prescription diets.
All in all while not good I think it's something we can work with.
On the plus side for all the X-rays they took (at least 5) they didn't charge for any of them (when the tech asked her if she wanted an X-ray of pelvis I said cha ching cha ching lol and she said "oh no...we don't charge for these"). Of course, while talking to the vet ( she was in surgery today so she had a few minutes) I had my hand on the counter near the drawer and I didn't realize it was open. So when she leaned into the counter it closed on my pinky! I went OUCH...it really hurt lol. Still stinging a bit.
Crazy when at 325$ you think hmmmm less than I thought lol.

Well, all in all, it sounds like promising news! As you say, something you can work with! So glad the news is more positive than negative news!

Sorry about your finger!!!

Absolutely Gloria...I wonder too how much of the pain is caused by the arthritis, so I really hope we can get him on something that helps (the tramadol doesn't seem to do anything for him). He's really depressed....poor guy, I would be too if in pain all the time! I really just want to improve his quality of life...if he's with us for the next 6 months a year or two years I don't want him to be in pain.
He's a real trooper...stayed on his back the entire time (50 minutes) and only squirmed a little bit.
