Meet Pidge

Yep, a cryptic blue merle is a dog that LOOKS like a tricolor but genetically is a blue merle. If you check the dog closely you'll find a few small merled patches, but the overall impression the dog gives is that it is BLACK, not merled. The most important thing to remember is TRACK THAT MERLING GENE if you ever intend to breed pups. My dog Emma is a sable merle, she LOOKS like a shaded sable as an adult. If I hadn't watched the grey and taupe patches come and go in her fur from puppyhood to adulthood, I would have never thought that she had a merle gene in her. We were VERY careful in choosing a stud for her as we did not want any double merle puppies.

People have different views on what is considered "cryptic" I always thought it was the more than 50% black as well, but some people say it is not a "true cryptic" unless they carry the merle gene, but you can not see any merling. They call the others "limited" mereling. I don't really understand the difference.

I would consider my border collie mix a "cryptic" merle by the standard of 50% or more black, as her chest is merle in color - but everywhere else would be cream pointed or black. She looks like a tri until you see her from the front. She also has blue eyes.

Did you get the idea for the name Pidge from Lady and the Tramp, or did you come up with it yourselves?

Welcome! Your little girl is so beautiful! Shelties are so much fun! I have a male rescue sheltie buddy and just had to have one more!!! I found a female at a breeder.Her name is Sweetie . I just cant even begin to tell you how much joy they bring me! The Sheltie forum is such a wonderful place to visit!..
