Monty is coughing/choking almost none stop

That is the best news ever. Totally made my day! I am so happy for you and Monty & Mr B!! And so relieved. As others have said, I was really really worried, but I know that is nothing compared to how worried you were!

Just curious. Is the steroid Monty is getting Dexamethasone?

Thanks Elei, Sheep is right I believe what he has is called Prednisone (I'm just guessing at the spelling haha).

Thanks for the reminders about keeping his pills out of reach as he does love climbing lol. His kitchen climbing days seem to have come to end since the bin/can got moved but it's always better to be safe!

I wouldn't worry about him getting the meds, I'd worry about him getting the food! A Sheltie on Pred is like a heroin addict, they'll do anything for a food fix. Tully moved anything she could to the bench to get on it. And in her younger days would just take a flying leap! No food will be safe.

Tully is on 5mg a day, but she started on a much higher dose. The early days are hard because they get a lot of side effects (esp peeing a lot). As long as they monitor his liver he should be ok.

It's going to be scary bringing him home without knowing the cause.

They've finally managed to get a specialist to view all of Montys scans/tests etc and I have been given a rather long diagnosis. I may get this wrong as it has been over the phone and I'm not going in to see him until later. He has had Aspiration pneumonia resulting in Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema. He has been taken off steroids (as that can make it worse apparently....) and is now starting antibiotic therapy. They are working on the aspiration part as they think it may have been vomit/stomach acid. I certainly didn't see him be sick or have to clean any up but at least it seems I'm getting somewhere.

Gosh, how are you supposed to not have that happen again? What an odd diagnosis. A head scratcher for sure. Hope and pray the new round of RX protocols have him on the mend and home soon!
Forgot to ask yesterday...
Has his coughing diminished or stopped totally?

Yep I just know I can't have that stuff (bad for my eyes) and when I did have it I was cat on a tin roof.

That would rule out an allergy, so at least you won't have to make yourself nuts worrying about something at home. Pneumonia is dogs is very serious so thank heaven Monty came out of it! I'm glad you have a specialist involved...they'll make sure he gets the right meds and treatment for his recovery. I hope he's well enough to come home soon!

Totally different than an allergy, and I agree with Ann, a bit less scary. Brooke was once diagnosed with mild pneumonia because of an xray looking at her spine - (limping) the doc came out saying wow we caught the lungs in the xray and she's got pneumonia. We never found out how that happened and once her meds were done she was fine. A head scratcher for sure.

So happy to hear a specialist is now involved and Monty will be on the correct treatment. Interesting that he got better with the Pred though. It's a super anti-inflammatory so it probably calmed down the irritation in the lungs, but it impedes your immune system too so not the best for infection.

It does not take much to irritate the lungs - people with ALS or Parkinsons can get aspiration pneumonia just from inhaling saliva.

Have they given you a new release timeframe?
