My Anxious Shelties - Toby and Ginny - Updates on their Progress

So sorry you are going through this. I hope they do let you foster him. That would probably ease Toby's transition.

I agree with everyone else... you are doing what is right, for Toby, for your other two furbabies, and for you and your husband. It is sad that Toby wasn't a good fit for your family, but you are definitely doing the right thing by giving Toby the chance to find a place with another family, where he will hopefully be freed from his anxiety, and dependence on meds to manage it.

Melissa, I can't believe I missed this post. I am so sorry you are going through this. I'm certain you know in your heart that this is the best decision for your family and most importantly for Toby. Nevertheless, it must be a very painful life experience to go through.

I'm sure the rescue will find the perfect home for your sweet boy who simply needs a different environment in which to blossom. You have done everything you can (and much more!) and have gone through so much work to help Toby cope with his anxiety. You are a strong person to have come to the conclusion that you had reached a limit to the progress you can make with him and to accept that he would need a different home to get to be the best dog he can be.

Keep us posted and know that my thoughts are with you in these difficult times :hugs.

Have you tried a calming collar? Go to calmingcollars.com. Calming collars are handmade and filled w/ natural herbs. Totally worth the money! I ordered one last year for my now Angel Sheltie, Copper. He was battling Cushing's Disease and really developed bad anxiety over everything. You can pick your fabric color and everything. They smell great and are very soothing. You can get one "extra strong" if you request it. The herbs are all natural!! I still smell Copper's collar b/c I miss him so much, but it really did help a lot!!! Good luck!

I'm Fighting Giving Him Up

Its been such an emotional roller coaster, there's been so much going on in my personal life in addition to the stuff going on with Toby, not to mention my bad health. This stress definitely doesn't help me with my health issues.

I put my foot down about giving up Toby. I don't think giving him up is a solution. I think that my husband helping out with the dogs istead of sitting back and watching me struggle IS the solution. Having dogs was supposed to be a joint effort, and it never is. Feeding them and letting them out to potty is NOT enough.

If he has a problem with the cost of Toby's meds than he can sell his show truck that is only driven 2-4 times a year which we spend almost $600 a year ($50 a month!) to keep. THAT sounds like a solution to me.

Because now... I know.. surely.. most definitely.... things will get MUCH better <3 Because as long as family stays together, it always does. :hugs:fl Hugs to you Melissa!

We're Both Doing Better

We got through that rough patch and things are going much better. My stress levels are going down in general, my health is better and I'm getting more help with the dogs. Toby is continuing to do very well.

How well you might ask? Well enough for Toby to pass his therapy dog test. Toby is now a member of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs. :biggrin2:

I can't tell you how proud I am of him, he handled it so much better than I would have thought he would. He barked a bit at some unfamiliar sights and sounds, but calmed right down when he was able to sniff the objects making the sounds.

I'm still working on getting him completely off of his meds, with the help of homeopathy. It never ceases to amaze me how much it helps him! He was off the homeopathic remedy for a while and he started to slip when I started decreasing his meds. He now seems to be on the right track again and a little bit closer being off of the medication and only on natural alternatives. :smile2:
