My Anxious Shelties - Toby and Ginny - Updates on their Progress

Melissa: If you don't mind driving to Simcoe there is a vet that we use for dentistry that is much more reasonable and uses ISO as his anesthetic. I had Phoebe done a few months ago. My regular vet was going to be $700 but my guy that does the dentistry for me was $185 plus an additonal $60 for fluids - I always do fluids for any surgery. They are well versed in shelties - SOS uses them. Let me know if you want to do the drive.

My vet is usually pretty reasonably priced, but this tooth is further back and awkward to get at, which is why the price is higher apparently.

I appreciate the offer, but I think I'd rather stick with my vet, who knows Ginny.

I should also mention that she very thoughtfully suggested some alternatives with regard to flea and heart worm treatments to help me save some money. This after the fight I had with her about the cost of generic prozac.

So sorry to hear about Ginny. She is doing so well.

I was fortunate to find a vet in Fenwick who just loves Shelties.

Last week I dropped Toby to 10 mg of Prozac a day. He seems to be doing pretty well, although I did have to add the l-theanine back in for anxiety.

He's not as calm as I'd like him to be, but at the same time he seems to be coping well and doesn't seem too over the top nervous. I'm really hoping that he keeps improving!

That's great news! Keep up the good work :)

Feeling defeated

With a huge regret, I sent this email to the sheltie rescue,

My husband and I have come to the difficult conclusion that Toby will need to be re-homed. I love him to death and I'm crying as I write this, I really don't want to give him up after all I've been through with him but I feel its necessary.

Toby has been much more than we bargained for. We'd thought we were adopting a relatively stable dog who needed only basic training, instead its been a constant struggle to deal with his anxiety.

I've done most of Toby's training and rehabilitation on my own without the help of my husband, who doesn't understand how to deal with Toby, and its just become too much. The emotional stress of dealing with Toby has has been detrimental to my own health issues and is also putting a strain on my marriage.

My own health is not good and my treatments are costly so in addition to the emotional stress, the training costs and cost of his medication and treatments have added to our financial strain and to my stress.

At this time Toby's anxiety is considerably better than it was. He gets 10mg per day of generic prozac and 100mg a day of l-theanine to keep his anxiety under control. He's also undergone some homeopathic treatments which have helped him considerably. In the right environment it may be possible for him to be weaned off of the medication entirely.

Toby is currently up to date on all of his vaccines.

Toby used to be shy with some people but has really come out of his shell. He loves all people, but especially women. He's very affectionate and playful and great with kids, pets and other dogs. Toby has excellent house manners, is very obedient having completed several basic and advanced obedience courses and is typically good on leash. He's easy going and laid back and a clown. Toby has a great sense of humor.

Toby would do best in a quiet residential or rural area, as he has the most difficulty dealing with the sounds that are associated with living in the city. Toby's biggest triggers are large trucks/construction equipment, pickup trucks pulling trailers and any sudden metallic banging noises.

If you'd allow me to, I'd really like to foster Toby until a home is found for him. I've put my blood, sweat and tears into his training and finding relief for his anxiety, if you'll allow me to I'd love to be a part of finding the perfect home for him.

I've contacted two families I know who's shelties died of old age. They've both expressed interest in owning a sheltie again. With your approval, if they're interested I thought they might be good alternatives.

Please call me soon so we can discuss this further.

Sounds like you have thought this through and I have read your many posts concerning Toby and his anxiety issues . You have put Toby's interests before your own and really have given him your best and you can't ask for anything more than that. I am sure your heart is heavy and you will miss him very much, but I am also sure you will find the perfect home for him and he will be a blessing to this person/people. And that is a totally selfless act. :hugs

So sorry to hear about this, especially after everything you have put into Toby. I hope it works out for the best and the rescue is able to find a good alternative home. I can't imagine how hard this is for you. Sending good wishes.

I know that you won't let Toby go on to a less than wonderful situation—even if it takes some time to find that perfect place. I do so hope that in the long run, this is for the best. Have faith. :hugs

You have to do what is best for you and Toby. You did your best and gave over 100 percent trying to make it work. Your health and your marriage are your first priority. I believe with all my heart the right home environment will be found for Toby. I was just reading about a very destructive sheltie who got put in a new home and the new family has no idea what the other owner was talking about. With them he is sweet and mellow and hasn't exhibited any destructive behavior. Like you said he may even not have to take medication. Wishing you the best Melissa and hope your health improves. :hugs

So sorry you're going through this, I hope that it all turns out well on both ends. (ps-sorry i have a hard time making the connection between fb names and usernames on here...but I figured you were on the forums : )
