My Anxious Shelties - Toby and Ginny - Updates on their Progress

Glad to hear Ginny is making some progress. I know it must be so discouraging at times. Hope your hiking trip is just what she needs to regain confidence.

I'm so glad -- it all takes time, doesn't it. I have a friend who rescued a Collie. The dear didn't wag her tail for six months. Now she's the joy of the day!!

Ginny did Amazing!

Ginny is continuing to slowly come around. I'm hoping in a few weeks I can wean her off of the Zylkene/Lactium.

She's MUCH more comfortable in the back yard, but is still nervous of the grass. At least she's not hiding on the back porch any more. My trainer suggested giving her a stuffed Kong in the grass a few times a day. I keep meaning to feed her her meals out there too.

She's still pretty uncomfortable when we visit our friends where she was stung, not sure if there's anything we can do about that.

We had obedience class last night and she did AMAZING, especially considering we missed last week (I had the flu). We were practising stationary attention and attention while healing, something Ginny was struggling with the last class because of her nerves. Not only did she give me almost total attention, but she returned to her happy 'look at me being a good girl' prance, as if she was in a show ring. I haven't seen her comfortable enough to do that in a LONG time.

My trainer also decided to add teaching a retrieve to her advanced class, something I've never mastered with Ginny. She teaches us to do it backwards, to have the dog target the toy, then put their mouth on it, then pick it up, etc. This was GREAT for Ginny, who has been too afraid to play one on one. Not only did I get her to put her mouth on the toy, but she happily played with it and growled. I was SO excited.

She starting to act like the fun police again at home and initiating play with the other dogs at home. I'm SO happy to see her returning to normal, I was so worried about her.

Toby is doing great on walks but we're working on his barking at home. He's still doing better than he did but he REALLY wants to bark at his usual triggers. I did have to bring out the spray bottle and he caught on very quickly that barking more than a few times and after I've told him to 'hush' is not tolerated. Sadie and Ginny have become more respectful and obedient about their barking too.

I'm going to talk to my vet soon and see what her plan is with Toby and the Reconcile. I believe he needs to be on it for another month or two at least before trying to wean him off of it and onto the Zylkene/Lactium instead. I hope she agrees! I REALLY don't want to see him slip backwards!

I'll be doing the advanced obedience class with him that I'm now doing with Ginny, starting at the end of September. I'm REALLY looking forward to it!

I am very happy to hear both Ginny and Toby are continuing to improve!

Did your vet ever approve the Zylkene/Lactium pills you bought on the internet?

I never heard back from her, but will be discussing it with her this week. Will let you know how it goes, I haven't forgotten. :smile2:

It may be that she just hasn't had a chance to look into it yet, either that or she doesn't check her email much. :rolleyes2:

:) It's so fun to see the results appearing after so much work.

I'm sure Ginny and Toby are thankful that you are helping them learn to deal with stress and anxiety in a better way!

Keep up the good work!

That is just the best news, so very happy that they are doing so well and you are seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

Two Steps Forward for Ginny, Two back for Toby

Ginny is pretty much back to normal. She's bossy and playful again and has no trouble playing with me or Toby and Sadie. She's turned into the fun police again so I have to keep an eye on her, plus she's back to stealing anything the other two want. At least things are back to normal. :smile2:

She's still nervous when we go visit my friend, where she was stung. I think she'll come around eventually, she just has to relearn that its a fun place.

She's been doing so well at obedience that they want me to show her in Rally. Maybe some day.

Toby is not doing so well any more. He's been slowly slipping backwards over the past two weeks and is barking and hiding between 1-4 times a day again. I think he needs the dose of his medication increased, but I just bought him a new bottle of his current dose and we need to use that up first since its so expensive. In the mean time I'm adding Lactium to the mix to see if it helps.

I start the advanced obedience class with Toby on the 27th and I'm really looking forward to it!
