My Sheltie boy Butch has Bladder Cancer

Amelia, I am so sorry...you gave your Butch the final gift of love to end his suffering...but I know how much it hurts to have to come to that choice. Butch is at peace...and hopefully in time you will find peace in the memories of all the years and the love he shared with you.

When you have done all you can do

My Sheltie was diagnosed with bladder cancer four months ago. It is not located where it is blocking any passages and has not spread to anywhere else. We are giving him chemo along with peroxicam and he only has two chemo treatments left (and I cannot afford any more than the recommended six). We couldn't even afford that but we took our life savings to try to save him. The chemo has only kept it from spreading, but has not shrunk it at all. It is the same it has been since we found it. Does anyone know of anyone that has survived this terrible disease? I feel that when we stop the chemo it will spread and we will need to put him down. He is 10 years old, I am not ready to lose my boy. This is heartbreaking for me and cannot stop the tears from flowing every time I think of it. Can anyone help me?

I've had to make the same decision, and here's my five cents worth, for what it's worth...

When you have done all you can do, and you know right now that you've done all that you can-- it's so very clear that you have--then it's time to let nature take its course. Love your boy, make every remaining day as loving, happy, and comfortable as you can, and begin to let go. For his well being and for yours. Prepare yourself for the inevitable end--in love and gratitude for the life you've been fortunate enough to share with your beloved Sheltie. Prevent him from experiencing needless pain. And when it's time, end his life gently and in peace and love. Be present at the end. It's so difficult, but be there for him. And let him go. Once it's over, do your grieving, then celebrate the boy's life with family, with friends--perhaps with a pet grief recovery group--and move on in time, knowing that the ones we love really never leave us. Hold fast to the happy memories that are his legacy of love to you. Remember joy. Your Sheltie Boy would thank you for that.

This is the advice that all my friends gave me when I had to have my fifteen year old Sheltie put to sleep not long ago. I hope you might find some use for it, and some solace for your aching heart. You are not alone.

You and yours will be in my thoughts and prayers, and in the thoughts of the good people in this wonderful Sheltie Nation. You can do this. Do it for him. And for you.

Here's a big hug for you :hugs

Kind Words

Thank you all for your kind words. We are really having a hard time of it. Can't seem to think of anything else. We miss him. The house is empty without him. His sister just lays on the couch and looks so depressed. She won't play at all. Don't know what to do. Our hearts are so broken. Must go cannot stop crying. Thank you for all your support. Really appreciate it. amelia

Amelia, although it doesn't seem possible now, time will gradually take the sharpest edges off your grief even though you will never stop missing Butch.

His sister is grieving too...try hard to focus attention and time on her to help her through her loss. Helping her will help you too.

Again, I am so sorry...most of us on SN know all too well the heartbreak of losing such a beloved soul. Butch was blessed to be so deeply loved for his time here on earth.

Help me....

It has been one week today and our beloved Butch went to the rainbow bride. It is so hard I cannot take the pain of this broken heart. All of you understand the way I feel so I am writing this because I know you are here for me. Wish I could meet all of you and hug you in person. Even though I am suffering from his loss I know in my heart our boy is finally at rest. I'd rather suffer than let him suffer. They need to come up with something that can heal a broken heart. They really need to find a cure for this awful cancer..Amelia

Amelia, I lost my boy to liver failure. It never gets easy. As I have said before in this forum, what is the alternative to losing them, never having them beside us? Nope, just loving them while they are here, best we can and know that they love us.

I still miss Seamus every day since 2011 as I miss all of my shelties that I have lost. It never gets easier but one day you find yourself smiling through and you meet another special baby and say, this is it and you continue to shower your love.

Hugs and support,

Kate

Amelia,

Please take comfort in knowing that you acted in love and did the right thing for Butch. It may not help now, but in time, you'll remember without undue pain the charming and loving boy he was. Those good memories, and your smiles, will return.

I've lit a candle and said a prayer for you and yours, and for Butch.

Remember love.
