Not a good day.....

OH MY!! :eek2:

I've been totally offline for a few days and am just now starting to catch up. So glad to hear that Indy is on the mend, but so sorry that you had such a scare.

off for a week- lots been happening here. glad that Indy is ok
taking forever to catch up

Indy the little wart hog is eating pretty much normal now, but he is obviously not jumping around too much....although he forgets himself sometimes and my insides just clench when he decides to jump off the bed without me lifting him.

He's not obsessed with his surtures, so I've not had to leave the cone on him. Yey!

He is still on special diet and medication, but he's almost his old self...almost....I don't think I've seen him poo in two days.

At what point does one get concerned about constipation? I have to keep him on this controlled diet. Would a little pepto bismal work?

I'm glad he's starting to feel like his old self again.

I'm not sure about constipation. Maybe something high in fiber? A little pumpkin or carrot might help.

Bran(one or two teaspoons, metamucil or psyllium (1/2 teaspoon twice a day, mineral oil (two teaspoons twice a day for only a week) all may help. Because he has had surgery to his gastointestinal tract and hasn't eaten, it may be a few days before you see any constipation. Lots of water and as much exercise (walking) as he can handle. This sounds so much like what I have to tell our human surgical patients. Not sure if milk of magnesia would help. Fibre usually does the trick.

I would make sure that he gets a lot of fluids. Maybe some ice cubes, or something I do with dogs that need more fluids in their system is make chicken broth ice cubes. The more fluids, the easier it will be for him to poo.

Hey....are we talking about poo again

We ALL know how you feel Barb as all of us have had near misses with both our human and furkids. As moms we feel so guilty afterwards .Indy will be just fine, you're a GREAT momma!!!!

I'm sure when he had surgery the drs completely emptied out his stomach and flushed everything else, so he's probably fairly emtpy, therefore no poop yet??!!

I swear when I die I want to come back as one of our pets with the quality of care we give them

He's drinking lots of fluids...all on his own. So I think he's well hydrated I just haven't seen him poo yet.

And reading up on both his meds (Sucralfate for his tummy; Tramadol for his pain - both have constipation side effects.

I'm not supposed to play with his diet much (sticking to the Gastro canned food they sent home with me) for a few more days. Though I've cheated and inserted his kibble into as well.

He seems to be ansty about his bum. If I touch his tail or anywhere near his netherparts, he just goes nuts. But that's nowhere near his incisions.

And his incisions/staples look fine. They seem to be closing nicely.

I looked under his tail and it does not look red, swollen, etc. But every time I try to check him out, he goes crazy. Why would he be antsy about his butt? It does look like they shaved his butt some. I'm thinking about putting some old fashioned Penaton cream on it.

If you are worried....and his butt is hurting you may want to try some mineral oil. This will not hurt him....and is often used for constipated animals. It will not affect the diet, just lube him up some and make it not hurt so bad :(

Even though it has been two days Barb,i really would not be nervous about no poo's yet.
He has gone thru major surgery, and getting his system back on a regular diet, may take a little bit to work through his system.I've seen two days with no poo's with surgery with females & males just for routine spays & neuters.

As since thier diets were on hold a almost full 12 hours prior to surgey. If there has'nt been much for solids, and olny liquids, theres nothing to come out.

Plus who knows what they did in surgery as far as stomach contents.I would definately keep pushing fluids, and you say he is drinking well,so that is a plus.
