Trini, I was so glad to see your post...
"This morning brought another milestone as he rolled around happily in the dew dampened grass. He has always loved to roll in wet grass but hadn't even tried to roll since the amputation. So, tiny happy steps to what will be Sketchie's new normal."
THANKS so much for being there for others who are struggling with this diagnosis! Sheltie Nation, and specifically folks like you are a GOD send to those of us in need of reassurance and comfort. Even more touching knowing you and your family are going through struggles of your own. Yet, you reach out to help others...
Thanks, Gloria...I think everyone here does their best to help out when others are facing an emotionally charged decision for one of their little ones...thankfully we have a very special group on SN. And the collective experiences and information shared can be such a big support to anyone facing a situation for the very first time by helping them to know what questions to ask their vet/specialist and also what hurdles they may face during recovery from any treatment.
I have so appreciated everyone's support as Sketchie makes this journey. Whether or not people had first hand experience to share...just knowing that others care makes you feel less alone when the going gets tough.
So glad your amazing-sounding vet had test results just in time that allowed you not to have to make the hardest decision of all. Many, many hugs and kisses from my crew to Sketch. Hopefully you have bought him years of good quality of life yet.
Sharon, we are so lucky to have the vet we have. I have used the same vet practice for over 40 years for our little ones...and this particular vet for over 20 years. He is truly wonderful and by now he is like a member of the family. The morning we brought Sketchie in with the fractured femur, he met us in the parking lot and the rest of his day was rescheduled so he could focus 100% on Sketchie and do the surgery literally 3 hours later. Having that incredible level of support in a crisis is an amazing gift.
I hope the swelling is a just a minor thing that doesn't impede more progress. But I know that the mental stuff is just as important, so yippee for grass rolling!!! And then maybe you can get some well deserved and needed sleep. Curled up with your boy Shetchie, of course
I guess if I do go that route I need to find a good cone since it will become very important. And check my sick leave at work (I don't care what anyone says, sleep deprivation and emotional exhaustion calls for sick days)
Yesterday we went hiking with a friend, and today we are going to the beach. I decided that if we are going to be going through a few months of very challenging circumstances, Gavin and I need to live it up now! We normally would only do one of those activities a weekend. It would be at least a few months post op before we could go back to the beach.
As wonderful as this forum and the internet is, It kinda sucks we are all so spread out over the US/country/world and can't all help each other out in real life. But give Sketchie a but rub for me (Gavinb's favorite) and tell him to be good for his Mom
Cindy, it sounds like you and Gavin are headed for a really fun weekend...enjoy!
Today Sketchie got to do one of his favorite activities...Cheerio (honey nut only...their favorite) hunting outside in the grass...which is always a happy time with my crew. In the background is our rescue Sheltie boy, Dakota (sable merle), and the fluffy orange butt on the right is our Pommie rescue boy, Mickey, who is huge for a Pommie. The race is on to see who can grab the most Cheerios...believe me they don't miss a single one!
Cheerio hunting what a great idea! I'll have to try that. Great photo, Sketch looks well balanced on his 3 legs. As for Mickey, he really is big - I'd love to see the face that goes with that fluff-butt!
I think I have some Cheerios in the pantry! Zulu and I are going outside! Good to see Sketchie up and about. I know it must make you feel so much better too.
So good to hear that Sketch is picking up more and more with every day. I'm sure you are both looking forward to consigning the cone to history though. Loved the Cheerio hunting picture of all the boys together - great fun!
This house is always stocked with many boxes of honey nut Cheerios. Cheerios have provided literally hundreds of hours of fun for our little ones...even in the winter they have a blast digging into the snow to recover the Cheerios and then they come inside happy, tired and ready for a nice long winter's nap.
