Prayers for Logan please...

Poor baby! I hope treating his pancreatitis helps him feel better :(

I found this through search.. <https://sheltieforums.com/threads/shelties-pancreatitis-gallbladder-disease-commercial-food.25156/>

Yes, I knew about this thread and thank you for bringing it back to my attention. However, my dilemma is, a diet for pancreatitis is not going to work for a dog with kidney disease. An example: It is OK to feed your dog butter which is good for the Kidney compromised dog (not that I would), but it would KILL a dog with pancreatitis. I need a food that is OK for both conditions... that is the problem...

Moderate to High Fat

Fat is low in phosphorus and a good energy source. Sources of “good” fat include:

  • Fatty meats
  • Coconut oil
  • Fish oil (e.g. salmon oil)
  • Butter
Vegetables should be cooked or pureed, and good vegetables to include in a renal diet include:

  • pumpkin
  • white potatoes
  • squash
  • green beans
  • collard greens
  • carrots
  • zucchini
  • turnip
Grains that are low in phosphorus include barley, buckwheat and white sticky rice (the rice used to make sushi).

Is it possible either of these situations is acute (and may resolve) and not chronic? I wish I had some way to help..

i have no answers, but please know that my thoughts are with you and your crew, especially Logan, always. After reading the list above, and being the Jewish mother that I am, may I suggest making a big pot of chicken soup? Even if he doesn't eat the chicken or veggies (I usually use carrots and celery, but potatoes would also work) he'll get some nutrition and hydration from the broth. If you make too much, it freezes well.

I'm glad Logan is home, and I hope on the road to recovery. Mimiretz may be on to something. Have you considered cooking his meals yourself? That way you could control what he can and can't eat. Perhaps a nutritionist can help you find a balance between the two diagnoses. Calling one of the vet schools is a good suggestion. At the moment, it sounds like very limited ingredients is the way to go. You need someone to tell you which ingredients those should be. You might start here, with the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. Perhaps they can steer you toward someone who can advise you. And here's a site that allows you to submit specific questions to a canine nutritionist online. Hang in there, Gloria. If anyone can find the best cure for Logan, it's you.

Well, the vet just called. He tried to feed Logan and he would not eat. He seems very lethargic and he wants to keep him overnight. He got a pain shot and an antinausea shot too. He is hoping when those kick in he will feel better and he will give him both shots as well tomorrow. He got one bag of fluids today and will get another overnight.

I asked him to be frank with me and let me know Logan's prognosis. He is very kind and said that he is cautiously optimistic. He feels once Logans Pancreatitis calms down and he did so well before that he wants to give him a chance...

I just feel terrible leaving him at the vet. But, I know they can help him more than my love alone.
Gosh... this is so hard... I am just pleased that the vet feels he might rally with another day of fluids and the two shots. Going numb again...

Pancreatitis can be very scary, but I think it's good news that the vet feels he will be able to come home tomorrow. I know of dogs that have been hospitalized for many days with acute pancreatitis, so even though I know this sounds like a terrible setback, hopefully he really just needs that extra day. But I understand. It's an awful feeling when your dog is sick and even worse when you can't be there with him to reassure him. I'm sure the vet's office is giving him a lot of love and gentle care to help him out. As much as we want them to be home with us it sounds like this is what he needs tonight.

It sounds like Logan is in the best place he can be for now, Gloria. I feel your pain....it's so hard leaving them in someone else's hands. Prayers continue that Logan rallies and his appetitie improves. The encouraging news from your vet is good! Hold onto that until tomorrow.
