Puppy Mills list

That and ignorance. I never would have bought ANY animal from a pet store had I known what kind of 'breeders' they were getting them from. My cat had a heart murmur, something I'm sure she never would have had if she had come from a good breeder instead of a pet store. Thankfully she was pretty healthy and lived a good 14 years, but I know better now. Or at least enough to adopt from the SPCA instead

More people than you would think simply don't know what a puppy mill is. I'd never even heard the term until it was too late.

Another sad thing is that a lot of the people who do know what a puppy mill is think that puppy mills only sell to pet stores. That is not the case all of the time (sometimes, but not all the time). There are puppy auctions, newspaper ads, websites, puppy brokers, ect.

It is very sad that most people turn a blind eye to this business (both puppy mills and BYB). "I don't want to get involved". "I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings".

How many shelties are begging us to get involved and to not care so much if we hurt somebody's feelings?

My feelings were hurt when I spent the greater part of Smudge's first few months at the vet's office. Do you think the puppy miller cared if my feelings were hurt?

Nope.

Megans ears are not tipped either, but you can just tell the Shelties from that particular website that there is a SERIOUS problem. :dead:

I think Sharon's point here was that the dogs they are breeding are not being groomed for show and noone went through the effort to tip their ears. A lot but not all reputable breeders do conformation shows.

I wonder if there is anything that can be done to spread the word? Perhaps aside from chain e-mails. I mean, here we are preaching to the choir, for the most part.

Well that was why I thought this thread might be helpful. While we may be talking, there are others that come here just to read. Hopefully, the ext time someone goes to buy a puppy, they visit this forum, read this thread and learn a little more than they knew to begin with.

Awesome idea! Knowledge is everything.

We have a lady here who breeds Shelties. Litter after litter. She sells females for 200 and males for 150. I chose to not even look at her pups when I was wanting another. Cant say for sure but you get what you pay for! Im sure if Id of went I would be at the vet more than home with the pup!
I see an ad in the paper and when I called the guy said he didnt remember when his pups were born but said they were up to date on shots....like I believed that....I ended up finding Sweetie...she wasnt a puppy but she needed a home as she had been a working dog . I felt my money would be better spent on her. Some day I will get a puppy but right now Im very much in love with my OLDER Shelties.

I can't believe the prices on that "breeders' network" site. $925 and up for pups that aren't even moderately good examples of the breed and probably will have health problems, as well. No thank you!

Are you serious? :uhoh: That's wild! I wonder how they were up to date on shots?! If you don't know how old it is how do you know when it needs shots?! :eek2:

I'm not sure this is a puppy mill, but I think there is something very suspicious about this website.

http://www.illinoissheltiebreeders.com/

There is a version of it for every state and every breed.

I'm kind of ashamed to say, when we were trying to find a sheltie puppy I did call this place up. Something was fishy. They said they would not allow us to meet the breeder and would only ship the puppies. .

Yes, this falls into the category. I did exactly the same thing as you, and got the same kind of cagey responses. That's when I syc'd the city bylaw and SPCA on them.
