Rally Training

Jump Height Question:

Although Miko isn't jumping, I was reading the rules and I don't see any jump heights for "veteran" dogs. I mean, to ask Miko to jump 12" seems kinda crazy at 12 yo. Wouldn't you agree?

My form says jump heights MUST be listed, so I'll list 12", like I said, it doesn't matter, but was just wondering about those older dogs in Excellent Levels.

Novice doesn't have jumps so you don't need to list a jump height for these classes. when you move up to Advance, then you will need to list a height :wink2:

I was told most points come from handler errors. Yikes! Y'know, I didn't even see the arrow, that's the sad part. I need to remember to LOOK. I was definitely more focused on Miko than signs. Hopefully I won't be too nervous.
I wonder how come Callie just lies down and that's it. Seems so strange. Does she just shut down? I hope my old man doesn't lie down then go to sleep. LOL. That'd be funny though. Oh well, I don't expect anything, well, okay, I do, but if I (or he) screw up, I won't care.

Forgot to write that I'll check the premium. Um, yeah, it's 40 pages. This should be an interesting read.

Callie does have a hip issue- so I think that sitting is less comfortable than down. so once she has decided that she's had enough, down she goes :wink2:
She's been on vacation since our trial in Sept- first, I thought she needed a week off, then had to get ready for Dixie, then working with Cran and Dixie so not too much time/effort with Callie. so not sure when we'll be getting back to her rally training or when she'll compete again. The pups are taking a lot of time right now

No no. I understand that. However, since the premium states, "if a jump height is not listed, the entry will not be accepted", so regardless, I'm putting something down. How about 22"? LOL.

Aw...poor Callie. Totally understandable that she'll just lie down. I was worried that I'd have issues with Miko too, but I have come to find out when his nails are long, he dislikes lying down. When they're cut, he's fine. I need to be sure they're cut, so he'll stay in a down. How old is Callie? And has she been enjoying her vacation? I always wonder if some dogs would just rather NOT work. Like Miko. Everyone keeps saying how mean I am because he's 12 yo.

She is 9 by the info from the rescue though I have had several people tell me they think she's older than that.
I think that she has enjoyed not working- I know that she is missing the treat portion and maybe a little jealous that the pups get so much attention. but they still need to learn all the things that she already knows so lots more practice time for them

I had started with Happy - working to compete in rally- he was 11 then. He did compete in one trial- the judge's comment on our NQ - unmanageable. I thought he did better than several of the other dogs. He had only been walking on my left side for 6 weeks versus 6 years of being my right-side dog  so that meant he tried to cross behind me a couple of times to get on my right- but he never got the whole way over because I got him back to the left. He sat and downed when asked- in my opinion - not unmanageable. I'm pretty sure that at other trials, I've seen performances that weren't as good that got a Q :rolleyes2:

You kinda understood and misunderstood. lol. If I get a Q on his first run, and assuming I get 2 at the show in 2 weeks, that'll make 3, hence a move-up. I'm just being hopeful he'll Q every run. If not, those are "just in case" rounds. And I may need more. BTW, Rally/Obedience is EXPENSIVE!!!

AH I see. I knew I wasn't following. :smile2:

AKC doesn't have veteran jump heights.:( Which is dumb. UKC doesn't either for Rally that I could see and they do for obedience and agility after 7 yrs. :confused2:

I always practice at lower jump heights. My dogs know how to jump why put more wear and tear on them.

Ahhh...see, that's what I think my trainer was talking about. If you have a nice heel, they'll be more likely to forgive "other" things. Not a good heel, then they tend to be more harsh. I don't think that's fair, as there's a lot more to a "heel".

I am only doing this, at Miko's age, because he can't even walk on my right side (always on my left) in a slight heel position. He's got his basic obedience down (slow, but down), we just needed to learn the other things. My trainer asked if I was going to do reg obedience, I don't think so. Miko's not good with one-word commands not being repeated. lol.

And I admit, the title is more for me than him. But I want him to have a title, he deserves it.

That's kinda lame. In Rally, do they even have a "lower" jump height for those older dogs, or those that can't jump, i.e. bulldogs.

I used to train at lower heights with Koji....that is until he couldn't repeat the same thing with the higher jumps. WTH!?!? I know, right? So, at home, they're at least 12" if not his regulation height of 16".
