Rally Training

Miko is looking really good. You come a long way in a short time.

When your dog is lagging going faster will help them keep up. Slowing down and looking back will slow them down even more. The dog cues off the pressure of the shoulder position. If you turn back to look at him and shift your shoulder backwards that will push him back farther and sometimes out. Try to keep your shoulders squared up(pretend your torso does not twist at the waist) and only turn your head or better yet only shift you eyes towards Mijo to watch him and you should see Mijo speeding up and not lagging as much.:smile2:

Thanks for the advice, I didn't even think about that. I'll give it a try. Don't look back, just go. I also noticed, as the trainer said, he did a lot better when I go fast. I think he was also tired. We did this run (or whatever you call them, lol. I only know agility lingo, sorry) after about 30 mins of training overall.

But the trainer was very excited about our heeling. She said it looked wonderful! and that a judge would be more lenient to a dog that heels well, versus one that doesn't (her words), because they seem like they know what they're doing. Whatevers. I want Miko to have fun, enjoy, and do well.

I think with short training sessions 10 mins and only 1 leg a day, he wont' lag as much.

Looks like I'll need to work on my fronts, she said he's too far away. Darn. lol.

looking good- now that he's got the general idea, you can perfect his positions. getting a little closer or straighter will be the only way to get treats now

He looks great! He left 360 looks really good! How did you end up teaching him to do left turns?

Well, he responds to pressure really well, so I didn't have to teach him that. As long as I can cut him off, we're good. If he's in front of me, I'd be screwed. Thank gawd, for the most part, his heeling is good.

Do most people tend to use a command for left? Obviously, I'm not doing this the "correct" way and am playing off of Miko's natural tendency to respond to pressure and be obedient. lol. I know, it's sad. Imagine how good he could've been if I knew what I was doing.

corbinam: Thanks. We've come a long ways in the past month or so. He's really enjoying the clicker training. Wish I knew about that 12 years ago. He would've been an even great dog (if that's possible, lol)

calliesmom: hmmm....yes, I know. I feel bad, because I wonder if he understands clicker training yet. I've been using luring versus touching, so it's a shortcut. Sigh. I figure, 3 legs, a Q, an RN and he can retire 100%. I will have to be "harder" on my training....no treats for not being in a better position.

FYI. I am signing up for his second trial soon. As soon as I figure out HOW to. For anyone.....if AKC lists 2 separate events, but on the same day I'm assuming it means there'll be 2 rounds of Rally on one day, is that correct? Not sure how Miko would do with the second round, but I'm hoping he won't need it. Besides, we're not moving up to Open....no leash! Yikes! lol. Now I'm debating. Should I just go for it? If I Q on round 1 for my RN title, should I move up to Open that same day? Wonder if you can anyways. That'd be a quick change. Hmm.....

I also wanted to add......I'm so glad for walk-throughs. Jeez. I did the 360 the wrong way, then walked it 2 more times the RIGHT way. Then when I did the whole thing with Miko, I still did the 360 the wrong way. I really need to remember to read the signs a bit. Although I know I have "time" (versus agility) to read the signs, I really need to go study up on them. Maybe I'll remember my left from my right (and this is why I use "switch" in agility and not "left/right"). I hope they don't have a lot of those paperclip ones. I cal it that, the one where you go around the 3 cones and up dizzy. I get so dizzy, lol. And then I'll be off my game. Oh well. I think we'll do fine.

if two are listed- they are two separate trials and should have two different judges- one of the trials that we went to was set up that way. Two trials on Sat and one on Sun- theoretically a title in a weekend. Most clubs allow move-ups if you get your title but you'll have to check the premium to be sure. moving into Advanced from Novice is definitely a challenge. The missing leash means they don't have to stay as close to you as you think they will. Callie had to keep checking on where the judge was and when she was done, she did a beautiful down and did not move again. we've competed in Advanced three times and she picked three different places to quit. #1 she actually laid down before we even started. Once I got her sitting again, the judge asked if we were ready, said yes and went. first sign 360- she did that but wouldn't come with me to the jump.
#2 I feel like checking the map but it was very early in the course, she was supposed to sit, stand, walk around- she chose sit, down, not move at all.
#3 we at least got halfway through the course before we had a sign with a down and there she stayed. so three tries and three times, I pulled her because she was done- compared to Novice- three tries and three Q's.

I love the arrows on the signs- just go the way that the arrows point and look ahead for the next sign :smile2:

Not sure I understand but you have to Qs 3x to get your RN like you do in agility to get your NA or NAJ not just once.
So you'll need a minimum of 3 runs to get your RN. If they list 2 rally events they have 2 runs.

I agree with you on the run though and walk though. I am the queen of going the wrong way on turns. Not so bad if it is a 360 but I might not know you've done it but really bad on a 270 when you heel into the wall. (yes I've done it)
I alos get dizzy easily.

I think I've told the story before. When Justice was in advanced I turned the wrong way on a 270 and turned into the wall. Later in the same run Justice got all excited by the jump and took off, I called him back and he did a 360 to the right right in front of the sign that said 360 right. Some little kid yelled "That dog can read!" As I finished and walked out of the ring, my friend say to me " That dog can read , too bad the handler can't" :rolleyes2: I never claimed to be the smart one of the team.:biggrin2:

I was told most points come from handler errors. Yikes! Y'know, I didn't even see the arrow, that's the sad part. I need to remember to LOOK. I was definitely more focused on Miko than signs. Hopefully I won't be too nervous.
I wonder how come Callie just lies down and that's it. Seems so strange. Does she just shut down? I hope my old man doesn't lie down then go to sleep. LOL. That'd be funny though. Oh well, I don't expect anything, well, okay, I do, but if I (or he) screw up, I won't care.

Forgot to write that I'll check the premium. Um, yeah, it's 40 pages. This should be an interesting read.

You kinda understood and misunderstood. lol. If I get a Q on his first run, and assuming I get 2 at the show in 2 weeks, that'll make 3, hence a move-up. I'm just being hopeful he'll Q every run. If not, those are "just in case" rounds. And I may need more. BTW, Rally/Obedience is EXPENSIVE!!!

Oh man. Heel into the wall? That's bad. Looks like the first trial will be outside, the second indoors, so I may have to watch out for walls too. I'm horrible with directions. That was one reason Rally scared me at first, but let's hope I can learn to read the signs better. lol.

Ohmigod. Too funny. Justice is so smart! He CAN read signs. Now, if he could only follow the numbers on the course too (agility too!).
