Ringing the bell

With my cats, I just always knew that a bell dangling around would be a bad idea. The cats would ring it just to dink with us.

Same here. When she was a puppy, of course I took her out every time she rang the bell, but only gave her a treat when she went to the bathroom. For the longest time, she only rang the bell when she had to go out and mostly still does. However, the last year or so I noticed that she rings the bell if she wants dinner or her "treat" (medicine). I can always tell the difference.

If I ignore her and she continues to ring the bell, then she has to potty. If she rings the bell and runs to the kitchen when I get up, she thinks it's dinner or pill time.

Then of course there's the ring the bell, I ignore, she rings the bell, I ignore, she rings the bell and gives me the stare of death....
That's too funny!:ROFLMAO:

I attempted the bell with my now 9-month old, who I got this past December. (He wasn't a Christmas present, timing just worked out!) I never could get him to ring it, and I hoping maybe he would because it was freezing, sub-zero temperatures this winter. Instead, I'd take him out, his feet would get cold, and he'd refuse to go-

She reminds me so, so much of my Gypsy! That look, like "Hurry up!" The impatience in the video is hilarious!

I never could get him to ring it, and I hoping maybe he would because it was freezing, sub-zero temperatures this winter. Instead, I'd take him out, his feet would get cold, and he'd refuse to go--only to pee or poop fifteen seconds later in the house! I only tried it because my cousin's dog, who's a Lab mix, does so well with it, but mine never caught on. Never get a puppy in winter, I've learned. :ROFLMAO:

He whines for the door now, and knock on wood, he's getting it. My first Sheltie did the same thing, she was super vocal, even moreso as she got older, and it was sometimes hard to figure out what her particular problem was that day!

I'm trying the bell thing with my new puppy, Devon. However, I've got it on the floor as it's one of those like the bells at a service counter except it's got a bigger spot on the top to ring it. I tried it with my previous Sheltie, Baron, but he wouldn't use it, and in fact through his whole life he never did anything to indicate that he had to go out. He had a giant tank and he just held it until he was let out. I never did find out how long he could actually hold it, as he never had an accident in the house after he was fully trained; but I know he did hold it once for 14 hours when I got stuck away from home a lot longer than I planned because of a snowstorm.

I've since removed the bell as Finnie would always just want to go outside to play and he'd ring it constantly and with lots of vigor (imagine with 2 paws bang bang bang:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)...he does better now without it. Worked for Piper but he too can hold it forever now so he doesn't need the bell anymore either.
