Sadie is suddenly paralyzed

Back from vacation and Sadie is doing REALLY well.

She's regained most of her motor skills and is able to walk completely on her own now, without the help of even her rubber boots.

She still drags her feet when she walks, but her feet don't knuckle under anymore.

She did lots of swimming with me in the pond, which helped a lot since she was so bored.

I've had a lot of trouble keeping her quiet these last few day, she wanted so badly to take off and run with the other dogs. She snuck off on me a couple of times and went up or down stairs on her own or took off running with the dogs.

We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning so I'm hoping the vet will give me the ok to start exercising her.

I'll try to get some swimming photos of her soon, as well as some photos of her walking.

I'm so relieved that she's done so well and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll make a full recovery. I'd say she's about 75-80% there already.

My boyfriend found me a pair that are rubber and they have about a 1/2" elastic band that wraps around the ankle and snaps. Since they are a little sturdier they have not slipped down very often. They are made by Four Paws item #1952. I will ask where he found them because they fit that skinny sheltie leg nicely.
I'm not completely sure if Chandler is scared or in Pain. He was never afraid to get off the bed before and this just started happening this week when he started jumping up on the bed again. He always has been very skiddish of things mostly noises and recently has become more frightened of many things he hears on tv. People cheering, a horn beep,he's always run and hid if he hears the whistles during sports events so it's a good thing I don't like football.
Sorry for rambling...........So did you end up doing the MRI ? I talked to both my vet and the neurologist and they say they would do that next for Chandler since he is turning away from dogfood completely and will only eat jerky type treats,maybe a biscuit or 2, he did eat 2 lambchops last week but has turned away from all other meats and wouldn't eat the last lambchops I made him on different occasions. Atleast the Jerky I give him is 100 % pure meat and has Chondroytin and Glucosomine in it.
Definitely be prepared with plenty of water and many potty trips. I measured Chandlers daily water intake out of curiosity and he was avg. 3 qts. to a gallon per day. He couldn't hold his bladder for longer than 3 hours at most.
I'll let you know how we do after I see the neurologist on Tuesday and looking forward to hearing more progress.
I hope you all can get some much needed rest on your vacation :sleepy: and just enjoying loving each other and being together. That's what life is really all about. It was really nice of your parents to offer but I could never have left her behind either.

The boots aren't neoprene, they're rubber. Once I had the velcro in the right place the stopped sliding off and were great when we were inside the cottage. Now that we're back she does't seem to need them at all, she's regained enough of her strength to walk on the hardwood by herself.

I hope that Chandler wasn't in pain! I guess I'll never know if that scream of Sadie's when it happened was from pain or fright, but she's never shown any possible signs of pain since, unless I pick her up wrong and accidentally pinch or pull her fur (I try not too but my arms are sore from carrying 25lbs of sheltie up/down stairs).

No, we never had an MRI done on Sadie. We couldn't afford it and the vet said that there was a good chance that it wouldn't show anything anyways. My vet said it would cost in the neighborhood of $2200. If we could have afforded it and were having the issues you're having with Chandler than we might have gotten her an MRI, depending on what the vet said, but it was just not an option for us right now. I hope that Chandler is feeling better soon!

Sadie is still peeing and drinking a lot but seems better able to hold it. We had her go before we went to bed last night and she was able to hold it till 7am this morning.

Still not sure what I'm going to do with her next week, going to have to find dog sitters for Monday and Tuesday, then maybe bring her in to work with me after that for a couple of days.

I have been checking in regularly to see how she has been doing.

I am so happy that she is feeling better. What e a relief for everyone :smile2:

What wonderful news! Thank you for keeping us updated on Sadie. I'd love to see swimming pictures - I'm sure she loves getting the exercise and spending that time with you.
 
Melissa that is such great news. I bet the swimming really helped. I am so very happy for you. Sounds like she is on her way to being 100% better. Welcome back home.
