Selecting a breeder

It is also important to point out that we have a number of breeders on this Forum besides Granite...show breeders, performance breeders, companion breeders. Many of them are "back yard breeders." That is not an insult, but neither should "show breeder" be. To attach derogatory labels to any of these categories is insulting to all of our breeding members who work hard at what they do.

Everyone here loves their dogs and does the best they can for them. It's why we are all part of this group. An exchange such as this is what makes our Forum worthwhile, especially to those who are not breeders and would like to learn. As Connie said, there is a dog for everyone.

I had to laugh at this. Tinkerbell had her version - she'd come half-way, then stop to make eye contact to see if I really wanted her to come. If my husband called her, she'd always look at me if I was there to see if she had to obey. If I wasn't there, she would walk as slowly as possible without falling over. My husband said it was hard not to laugh at her.
 
Worth Stating Again

It is a great responsibilty to breed animals and especially Shelties, because they are the best breed out of all breeds. I don't believe anyone here in this forum takes this responsiblity lightly, and I am thankful for the knowledge and diversity this group presents.

Cleveland did this, Ron would call him and he would look at me like, do I have to listen? I never once undermined Ron's authority, but he just looked at me as the Alpha (mainly because I made him listen 100% of the time and Ron on 90% of the time!!! I think they call that, Ron shooting himself in the foot:lol: )

My information on responsible breeding is the result of three+ years of research, and it's meant to be helpful.

Therein lies my only point of contention. From everything I've read, I get the feeling that non-show breeder does mean BYB to most people. To me, it doesn't.

Ann - I'm going to blame my defensiveness on the medium. I felt like there were some comments that belittled anyone but breeders who met a very stringent standard. Perhaps I read into the tone (which is so easy to do when all you see is text and not intent). My intention was merely to point out the other side, play devil's advocate.

Lightplum - I, in no means, want to diminish the work you put in to get your Champion titles. My conversations with show folk have been less than amiable (near the ring and not even at such a venue). It had nothing to do with them denying me a puppy, nothing to do with anything but their attitude toward me and my non-champion dogs. I'm one of those see it to believe it people, so if I meet genuinely nice show people my opinion can alter.

I've never seen the movie Best in Show.
 
I don't have a problem with BYB or people who breed show dogs. What I do have a problem with is puppy mills and the poor dogs who don't get a chance to live a healthy life.

I'm sorry if I made anybody mad by something I said. You know I didn't mean to. :uhoh: I try to get along with everybody, because I really like this forum. :biggrin2:

There is merit to what you say about breeders who use the AKC registry, but puppy mills and backyard breeders are not choosing to register there dogs with AKC anymore. The reason is because if you breed more then 10 litters a year, you are subject to an AKC inquiry and visit of facilities. Also, a stud used multple times is required to have a DNA profile on record with AKC.
Now.......can you see that this is weeding out the undesirable breeders? They do not want to incur the added expense, or of having an uninvited guest to their place. There are now several "paper" registries out there, that fit wonderfully with unscrupulas breeders. How about the "CKC"...that would be the Canine Kennel Club, and many more inventive names.

For the sake of keeping people informed who are looking for a breeder, make sure you don't get your acronyms mixed up. CKC also stands for Canadian Kennel Club, which is the Canadian version of the AKC and just as reputable.
