Sick little girl

I am so hoping that Scout is doing better. It is so hard to sit by & feel helpless. I remember when one of my shelties had surgery. They thought she had a diaphramatic hernia but when they went in it wasn't. Then they thought it was congestive heart failure. Not good having surgery & then hearing that. To get her to eat I tried baby food too. She didn't really want it & I think the anesthesia & meds had her feeling funky so food wasn't on her mind. I do remember them telling me to get Karo syrup or pancake syrup & rub some in her mouth or on her tongue. Something about the sugar making their blood sugar go up & stimulate the hunger response. I have tried it with good luck getting dogs to eat after being spayed. Also Gerber Stage 2 baby food with gravy might be something if you haven't tried it. I warmed it up slightly so it smelled a bit more appetizing.

Getting over the major surgery plus dealing with being weak before surgery is tough for Scout. Here are a couple of sites with info about getting a pet to eat after surgery. The 2nd one offers some food suggestions & explains why dogs don't always eat after surgery.

Just back from a visit with Scout. Her Albumin is even lower today and her platelet count is lower. They are going to give her a fresh blood transfusion.

She still is not eating, but they are squirting baby food by syringe into her mouth. She spit it out last night, but today tolerated it.

It is still a mystery as to what is actually going on internally. They think she had a clot in her intestines. Because of the albumin they are worried about the liver function. We are waiting for the liver biopsy to come back.

Not the improvement I had hoped for, but she came right to us when we got there. Her eyes looked more aware today and when I said "are you hungry?" she tilted her head and looked interested. But she wouldn't touch the boiled chicken & rice we brought. Maybe later today she will get an appetite.

She went to the window in the room where we were and stared out, like she was saying so when are we busting out of this joint?

That's all I know for now. There are many doctors and technicians taking wonderful care of her and trying to figure out what is going on so she can get better. All we can do is go hour by hour. Thanks for your prayers and messages of concern and healing.

I'm sure she was happy to see you :D
I'm glad she's keeping the baby food down, poor thing is probably worn out from throwing everything up!
Here's to hoping all her numbers improve and she gets better.

I can only imagine what your feeling. But your doing the best you can and scout sounds like she is getting great care. Is she getting fluids? She has gone through so much so it will take some time to get her back to normal. Don't be afraid to ask questions /) sending hugs and positive thoughts your way.

Yes, she is getting fluids by IV.

There have been times that I have had to force feed a dog when I still worked in clinic - hated every minute of it but basically we took ground meat with ground dog kibble and made little meatballs, no bigger than a the tip of your baby finger and fed them like a pill. We had one dog that I remember having to give 25 "pills" 4 times a day. She ended up hating me but it pulled her through. I wonder though if this is because of the liver assault and if she is going to digest properly. She is in my prayers, as are you and your family.
